UNIXy Guy. He/him. Prone to shouting "PUPPY" in public.

I frequently (almost every day, in fact) give away Kindle genre books using #KindleBookGiveaway hashtag, and wrote a feed named "Kindle Book Giveaway" -- but remember bsky has hashtags now!

For the past few years, I have been giving out ebooks for free. These are almost (but not always) US Kindle books; I sometimes to UK/IE Kindle books as well. I get asked about this a lot, so here are some notes:
• I will use the hashtag #KindleBookGiveaway
• These are legally purchased books

Ok, the first two episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy have me hooked. There are flaws (there was a *massive* CGI failure with whales in E2, for example), but... the climactic scene in E2 made me a bit misty-eyed.

Looking over my cached book sets for something to give away, and here are 10 US Kindle copies of @davidbrin.bsky.social's The Uplift War (The Uplift Saga Book 3), which I have, and have read, and have given away, and enjoyed, and all that stuff.

You remember that hero that punched Richard Spencer in the face? Never learned his name or saw him again. The real flex is to keep you mouth shut.

"So, do you have a quest," the witch asked as she finished dressing the last wound, "or doing general adventuring?"

"A quest. I seek a book."

"Ancient tome of forbidden lore?"

"No, one I read as a child."

"And this dragon didn't have it?"

"Alas."

"Have you asked a librarian?"

"They're scary!"

36 minutes into Starfleet Academy, and the very concept of SAM makes me cringe so much.

On the other hand, I turned on the first episode of Starfleet Academy, and that intro was the best use of the theme music ever.

This is really one of those "READ THE ARTICLE" moment. They want AI companies to use a dedicated API and PAY to get Wikipedia content instead of just scraping it as regular traffic. That's all.

Cached US #KindleBookGiveaway: 10 copies of Nine Goblins by @tkingfisher.com, which I've read, and enjoyed, although I liked it mostly because of the elfin veterinarian who had infinite patiences, which most vets should have.

Remember: this was necessary on their part, since they are getting *hammered* by AI systems, and the content is all CCL, so there's no prohibition against that use case. So what would you have them do -- be shut down because they can't pay their bills, or shut down to stop the access?

Too many won’t even risk their *political* lives and power for our families and neighbors, much less their freedom or physical safety. Politicians should be at the front of the protests, not waiting for poll numbers before committing. That’s one way @katmabu.bsky.social is earning my vote.
I will start to take our leader’s resolve seriously when they start shouldering the burden of courage they are demanding of us.

Wikipedia has signed AI licensing deals, and while I not happy about it, I can accept that they _had_ to.

Called my rep and said "I shall quote that the act of treason shall consist only of engaging in warfare against the United States, and that seems like a fairly good description of what's going on in MN, so once again I have to ask: Where are the articles of impeachment?"

Cached US #KindleBookGiveaway: 10 copies of The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle, a classic for a very good reason. It is funny, scary, bittersweet, and normal-sweet. It's probably one of the best books I've ever given away. There were rights problems for a while, due to abuse, but that's been fixed.
