What bugs me about that open letter (besides it being pointless) is it will inevitably be followed by "the bad people who don’t want to plagiarize strangers while overloading the power grid were mean and booboo on feelings we can’t have conversations "

So.. I really hate this time of year. My dad wad a catholic priest, defrocked for my mom. She left him and tried new things. He didn’t because God. They remained friends. Every year is a fucking nightmare of splitting big days between parents, in-laws, friends. I mean, why? This should be fun!!!!

If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to get more involved in fighting creeping Christofascism, clear your schedule on January 10.

The last time these ding dongs tried to march at Christie Pits they were outnumbered 10-1.

I bet we can do better than that this time.

Shortish 🧵 on translation in Canada. Because of the Official Languages Act, Canada was historically a good place to be a translator because the quality of the work was super important. Twenty years ago, an agency would charge maybe 0,25-0,32$ per word depending on the specialty 1/?

The saddest part is everyone, publishers included, knows the AI translation will be horrible, so they'll be paying underpaid translators even less to "proofread" the slop and make it moderately readable. AI is just an exxuse to relabel people and pay them a fraction of what they previously earned.
I have been very lucky to have my work translated in multiple languages, and by people who have an incredible connection with my writing and a care for it that is palpable on every page.
As a multiple language speaker it's also frustrating to see people using AI for translation because the English speaking world tends to treat translators like workers for hire instead of co authors of text and this feels like more of it. Translation at the literary level is creative work.

Seeing some slight overreactions to the new Nebula rules. It's pretty obvious no one is going to disqualify your work because you googled something. And no, I don't think you should do research on chatGPT. It supports the system, it's unreliable, and stealing from non-fiction isn't any better...

I do like the second part of the revised Nebula rules "Works that used LLMs at any point during the writing process must disclose this upon acceptance of the nomination, and those works will be disqualified." No plotting with the thing, no "I use it for world building", no nothing.
