This Pride month is going to feel different 🏳️‍🌈

Charged with palpable anger, passion and vigour unparalleled to recent years.

The long-discussed and often trite ‘is Pride still a protest?’ conversation has a clear and present answer this year — fuck yes 💪

So what do we need to keep in mind? 🧵

I hope it will be another piece of journalism that you can use to fight back 👇

Remarkable intervention, from a figure of seniority that we haven't seen in what feels like years, she added:

Jess got this in-depth, critical piece out, within six hours of this complicated ruling - and as the only Trans+ person to be commisioned in the entire UK media to do so - did a better job in that short time than the rest of the media has done since

Congrats Jess 👏

This piece of journalism absolutely rocked, and continues to inform, deliver and help people understand the ramifications.

The media and law sectors are vastly better with @jessothomson.co.uk's work, challenging them to be and do better 💪

Feels a bit egregious to post about awards two days in a row, but I have just found out I was nominated for – and have won – an independent journalism award for my reporting following the Supreme Court decision in For Women Scotland for @wearequeeraf.com

Thank you!
Winner Jess O'Thomson for their submission to the inaugural Indie Media Maverick Awards in the category of Digital Journalism.

False balance is the concept that is also sometimes known as bothsidesism - a nonsense word, which should tell you everything you need to know already.

It sees journalists present issues as balanced between 'opposing viewpoints', even when one position is supported by an abundance of evidence

If you valued this bigger picture, then it's what you can expect from all of our reporting in the @wearequeeraf.com newsletter.

With climate change and climate denialism, it's become a widely adopted media policy not to give it airtime anymore - it’s become a BBC editorial policy, not to air them.

Overall, that change has led to us hearing it only sparingly nowadays, or only on broadcasters like Fox and GB News
jamiewareham.co.uk
There is overwhelming evidence of Climate Change, its effects, its reality and the harm it is doing to all of us and the world.

And so whatever people 'believe', we should present the abundance of evidence - and set out claims to the contrary are unproven and baseless www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Trump makes unproven claims linking autism to Tylenol use by pregnant women
Some studies have suggested an association between the two, but experts say there is no causal relationship.

So how do you overcome it? Simple.

This is a problem that many media outlets and politicians have recently learned to overcome in another field: climate change. Let's explore the example.

There was 'technically' an equal amount of LGBTQIA+ trans inclusive organisations, as there were anti-trans respondents, but balancing the numbers isn’t everything:

It’s a trap the BBC often falls into and creates a false sense of balance, when views don't match up with facts

🚨 New police powers could ban face coverings at Pride protests even if you need to protect your identity because:

🔴 Risk of domestic abuse
🔴 You're not out as queer/Trans+
🔴 Fear of political views being made public

Health and disability reasons also won't prevent you getting arrested 🧵Here's why

This is a vastly upsetting case, that uses CPS guidelines that effectively mean if Trans+ people don't come out before sexual contact, they can now be found guilty of sexual assault - which is what has happened here

"This narrative, that merely existing as a trans person is a form of deception, puts our community in immense danger. It legitimises these kinds of attacks as a form of “revenge” for the wrongs wrought by trans people’s mere presence in public life." - @jessothomson.co.uk
