Waldverlust: Satellitendaten zeigen massive Schäden in deutschen Wäldern

It's absolutely astonishing: In just about 13 years, Norway has skyrocketed from virtually no sales of zero-emission battery electric vehicles to nearly 100% of all new passenger car purchases.

As we move to net zero, what happens to gas grids as fossil gas declines?

In “Managed decline,” I unpack the regulatory gaps driving higher bills and how countries are planning ahead. We need integrated, long-term planning for a just, orderly transition.

Managed decline: Regulating gas grids when gas ends
The transition to a climate-neutral future is happening, and with it, the era of fossil gas consumption is coming to an end. This is a…

Today we get this in the UK

“Putting fossil fuels on an equal footing with renewables by giving them a stable price is the key to a just transition.”

That didn't take long.

A year ago I wrote this:

"It will not surprise me if major investors in U.S. oil companies will be pushing for public ownership in a decade. They will be happy to unload the dying industry with huge debts. We should be planning for that now."

U.S. Policy Implications of Global Peak Oil Demand

This is really hard to tell. It would require to resuscitate a whole industry ecosystem and this requires some dedicated and reliable industry policy.

A new report on electrification from EMBER documents how the potential for electrification has increased over the past century, replacing fossil fuel uses. Nearly all societal needs can be electrified and provided by renewables, firmed by various types of storage. 🧪🔌💡☀️💨🔋
From 2000 to 2025, the potential to electrify building, industry and transportation has shifted from "technically feasible" and "still under development to mostly "already largely electrified and "can be electrified economically". The remaining challenges for electrification are planes and shipping for transport, and steel production, cement and chemical production. Electrification reduces the for much of global shipping, which is currently transport of fossil fuels (~40%). Methods for production of low emissions steel are available through direct iron reduction using hydrogen or electric arc furnaces.
