Excellent primer yesterday on the current basic #economics of #Argentina from @wbur.org On Point. Hear @mdebolle.com explain terms for non-specialists (with a side of fact checking). A good item to send friends doing the "it is not a bailout" song and dance.

The real reason for the U.S.-Argentina bailout
American taxpayers are bailing out Argentina to the tune of $20 billion. But what does the U.S. get out of it? And can it really fix Argentina’s economy?

Yesterday I started working with indices de catastro. These are alphabetic lists of property owners, their property, transactions, and property values. #Guadalajara #Mexico #sources #history #skystorians #archives #Urban The archivist had to clean off the books because she says nobody consults them.

Guillermo O'Donnell wrote this 26 years ago in an edited collection about the rule of law in Latin America. The Rule of Law is a complicated idea (see Whigs and Hunters), but generally it helps prevent civil decay and unrest. #RuleOfLaw

Public busses in #Guadalara #Mexico. 75 people in a full bear hug racing then suddenly braking together in absolute silence except a Luismi soundtrack.
Sometimes on the NYC subway, it hits just how weird it is for 50 strangers to be packed in a crate together while fully dedicated to pretending they don't exist

And some nascent midwest-esque part thinks "Maybe I should say hello--" before the NY part cuts in with "Mm I wouldn't recommend that"

In 2008 I was walking at 6am in Columbus, NM after camping at the state park with students. Border Patrol was driving on another street, saw me, flipped around, came racing up on me, pulled up, looked at me, then raced off. My white face was my "papers."

Saying it again into the void: #Farm and #Ranch voters are not the same as #Rural voters. Killing fams is not a losing position for the #MAGA #GOP because they retain rural voters via other positions. Farm votes are miniscule: even #skateboarders are a larger voting bloc.
