NextEra SVP Petter Skantze says battery storage is now “the cheapest form of new capacity” in the US w/ “order of magnitude” faster deployment than gas w/ more modularity & flexible siting to enable higher system utilization & large load integration — #GridFWD in Monterey, CA 🔌💡

I wonder if this will get even a small fraction of the press that the battery fire at Moss Landing received. Fires happen. But fossil fuel-related fires are far more common than fires at lithium ion facilities. And, a fire like Moss Landing will never happen again given design changes.

A fireball lit up the sky across the Los Angeles area on Thursday night after an explosion at a Chevron refinery in El Segundo, alarming nearby residents who said it felt like an earthquake. The cause of the explosion was not clear. No injuries were reported. nyti.ms/42pPCaW

I love me thermal storage, thats basically a heat mpump water heater after all! But for air I'd think that would create some challenges on space/footprint and make installs much tougher. Installer and customer uptake better with a "drop in" solution

*"new", not "mee." What even is mee, autocorrect?

Battery integrated heat pumps! Between this, Copper stoves, Pila Energy, V2H--we are seeing BTM #energystorage disintermediation and totally mee customer channels. (Which means every business is competing with every other business in this space...) Exciting times for innovation #energysky

Interesting, battery integrated into a heat pump system, so that energy can be stored and shifted when needed. An integrated system instead of two separate ones may also offer advantages in terms of efficiency.

Happy Liberation from Liberation Day, to all who celebrate

(altho the Supreme Court majority may just adopt the Federal Court of Appeals' dissent opinion re: legality of IEEPA tariffs, which is basically "emergency = unlimited POTUS tariff authority")

While it was long expected that the ERAS process would accelerate gas generation, it's interesting to see 15% of MW proposed are #EnergyStorage, primarily in Indiana, Michigan, and Minnesota. It will be interesting to see if those batteries have nearer-term CODs than the gas plants...
kensands.bsky.social
Just as renewable energy advocates predicted, MISO's claim of a "broad mix" of energy sources in the interconnection queue express lane actually means 74% gas plants. 🔌💡

Thermal storage is going to stay hot for a long time
janrosenow.bsky.social
The industrial world runs on heat, but until now, we haven't had a good way to store it. That's all changing fast.

Thermal energy storage (TES) is an often overlooked but critical solution for decarbonisation, especially since industrial heat accounts for two-thirds of the sector's energy use.

Are there any concerns with harmonizing large fleets of GFMs, ie, can you get undesirable fast-occurring system phenomena? If so, is the solution easy or hard? Are there any weird interactions with the existing GFL fleet?

Should grid forming be compensated service, or technical requirement?

Personally I am much less enthusiastic about posting. Between the community split across sites, the heightened state of vitriol/bad faith/shitposting, and the norming of non-factual assertions...just feels like being on any platform is less rewarding than energytwitter was. Do you feel that too?

So many 90s eras electronic tracks are being recycled into 2020s dance music. Not against it...but is it just cause I am old that I think the new versions are just bad even compared to the quasi-MIDI sounding originals?

Worth noting that Texas/ERCOT is moving ahead with requiring battery storage to use grid forming inverters starting in mid 2026. I expect this will become standard for batteries as inertia on grids declines

David is a pragmatist with an excellent depth of understanding of US energy and power markets and regulation. I am optimistic that he will provide steady leadership at FERC, even if it is for just a few months.

President Donald Trump made it official Aug. 13, naming David Rosner as the new chair of FERC several workdays after former Chair Mark Christie resigned. 🔌💡
