Tillis, in real time, inadvertently building an incredibly compelling argument for term limits in Congress
tillis drafting an excursus on MAGA sycophancy, complete with illustrations drawn from epic fantasy …is ….making me not hate him.

Teaching exercise that is helpful with my policy students. Based on the solution, hiring this fella to a fancy position and giving him $$$ in this environment, what is the root of skepticism with higher ed that Yale is attempting to solve? Whose skepticism do they seek to assuage?
OH COME ON. Brooks knows fuck-all about "society at large".

It starts in the states, and it requires two things: proportional representation for legislative bodies, and fusion voting in single-winner races. Eventually rolling back state-run party primaries, too. But PR is the only immediate “have a multi-party system” switch to flip and states can do it.
It's pretty clear most Americans actually want multiparty parliamentary democracy, with the strong parties it incentivizes. It's also quite clear that almost no one, among the public or politicians, wants to engage with what having something approximating that requires:

If you're wondering why the Dem Party just seems inept, I think this is the best explanation.

There is no party. There is a fundraising machine masquerading as a party.

during the George Floyd protests, the NYT commissioned an opinion piece titled "Send The Troops In", because they wanted to "hear from all sides of the debate".

they still haven't published a single article in favour of abolishing ICE
By who? Who shot the person dead? You saw the video. We all know a federal agent shot a man dead who was prone on the ground. Also, it's not "according to officials." It's according to verified video seen with your eyes. Not saying what anyone can obviously see with their eyes is a form of lying.

There are surely modern causes for the cravenness, resentment, and projected self-loathing which plague our society, but I often wonder about their deeper roots in the generations of abject poverty and exploitation we tolerated, & the desperation we forced families to inflict on one another.

Recently participated in a panel on the future of the NC economy, and a point I wish I'd made is that we regularly assume our "modern" industries (biotech, finance) are long-term guarantors of growth & jobs. But the same assumption was made in earlier eras, & global forces proved it unfounded.

8th Cir.: because officer was trying to shoot a 9-pound Pomeranian mix when he missed and shot the dog's owner instead, he did not intend to restrain owner, he intended to restrain the dog, which means there was no seizure so no 4A violation.

QI for officer.

there's a self-protective instinct that causes so many people to defend the state in moments of terror. it's so much easier to think renee good had nefarious intentions — or even made an unfortunate mistake — than it is to think "they will kill without reason, and they would kill me too."

In jest of course but it's worth pointing out that half of America grew up with grandpas spouting exactly this take; always a bit uncomfortable but the reasons for discomfort -- that awe at power can is never apolitical / is always a basis for authoritarian politics -- become clearest in retrospect
Agree or disagree with the merits of the operation, you can't help but be in awe of the Wehrmacht's Blitzkrieg of Poland

Once again, I’m wondering why Democrats aren’t running with a straightforward message of “despotism is un-American and unaffordable” right now and all the way into the midterms.

If I was a Congressional Democrat I'd be publicly asking whether or not it's possible the SecDef blasting out tactical details on non-secure devices is responsible for this.
So the Houthis spooked a US carrier into dropping a fighter jet in the drink.
UPDATE: A US official said that initial reports from the scene indicated that the Truman made a hard turn to evade Houthi fire, which contributed to the fighter jet falling overboard. www.cnn.com/2025/04/28/p...
