What motivates them? My sense is mostly grievance. They didn’t get into their first choice Ivy League school. Their kid didn’t get into their first choice Ivy League school. They wanted to be a professor, but didn’t make the cut. Take your pick.

I met this guy <https://nexus-instituut.nl/en/person/rod-dreher> at a Nexus Institute roundtable that my wife was participating in; at a reception, listened to him rail on endlessly about universities in decline, and not once did he ask me about my experience (35+ years). He knew it all in advance.

My experience is that these self-appointed critics and would-be reformers of the higher ed system *never* take the opportunity to talk to people in the higher ed sector. They’re just not curious and don’t ask questions. They know the answers in advance. They’re the antithesis of real scholars.

and just to be clear -- common knowledge about the distinctions between adjuncts, lecturers, and tenure line faculty. The way you connect these positions to academic freedom and vulnerability is very insightful - a lot of colleagues in the academy probably have not thought about these issues.

question for #AcademicSky -- received an AI subsidiary aggregation addendum from my publisher for a book that came out some years ago. Are you signing these kinds of agreements? I'm inclined to reject the request, but have no feel for the consequences/implications either way.

Let’s remember - the city of Portland has never “been burning”, now, in 2020,or whenever. We’re talking about a couple of square blocks city center of conflict, and all the buildings are still standing and operational to this day. FFS.
