Say what you will, but I love some sassy Hansard debate transcripts. This one from second reading of the Condominium Act 1998 in...1998:
A transcript of a debate in the Ontario legislature from 1998 about the condominium act, and some sassy comments about the town of Wawa:

Mr Bud Wildman (Algoma): I just want to let the member for Oakwood know that, indeed, even in Sault Ste Marie we have condos.

The Speaker: Questions and comments? Response, member for Oakwood.

Mr Wildman: It's on Lake Street, as a matter of fact.

Mr Colle: Is there one on Lake Street? The whole thing about condominiums is that they're everywhere. Whether you go to Wawa - I don't know if they're in Wawa or not.

Mr Wildman: No, not too many in Wawa.

Mr Bisson: Ask him if they have streetlights in Wawa.

At the same time, the people who come to Thunder Bay and deal drugs aren't always powerful themselves. I remember heartbreaking testimony from aToronto mom at her son's TBay bail hearing. She'd worked so hard to keep him out of gangs, she'd driven him to soccer, helped him with school... Also this:

The authors call the phenomenon street colonization, and invite us to explore the other ways that more powerful groups move in from bigger cities and take over local spaces. I can't help but see parallels with other spheres, beyond the drug trade.

It's fascinating to read an ethnography of where you live and grew up. Careful research about how big-city drug dealers come into Thunder Bay for profit, take over poor people's homes, and harm people in ways that become visible only when you hear their stories. rdcu.be/eCTsC

My most recent article was just published. It examines involuntary detentions under BC's Adult Guardianship Act. The topic is very relevant given the recent report on involuntary detentions by BC's Human Rights Commissioner.

Great recs from @mattseybold.bsky.social on resisting technofeudal education: prioritize print, practice ungrading, "Luddify" the classroom; de-mobilize computer infrastructure (root technology in social place!); faculty governance over SaaS subscriptions; instructor choice re: ed-tech

kind of just endlessly sad and grieving that there are so few voices in the public sphere making the basic principled argument that immigration is an affirmative good in every way and the best way for this country to serve humanity is to welcome people who want or need to leave their homes

Turns out "elbows up" means an incredible expansion of anti-migrant, policing, and surveillance powers under the guise of 'border security'. This is a must-read 🧵:

I came across a clipping from the Terrace Bay (Ontario) News, Oct 3, 1973, inviting people without status to meet the immigration officer and do their paperwork for landing under the Adjustment of Status program.

No portal, no webform, no PDF forms that won't open. Just a human coming to town.
Newspaper clipping:
MOBILE UNIT IN TERRACE BAY FRIDAY
The Department of Manpower and Immigration Mobile Unit is making its last swing through the area, Tim Dodd, officer in charge of Thunder Bay's Immigration Centre said today.
The mobile unit staffed by an immigration officer is travelling throught eh area to assist those people who are eligible to register under the immigration adjustment of status program. Anyone who is eligible to reghistere is urged to do so now, before the 15th of October. The fact that we have conditionally approved for landed status all who have been interviewed under the program is indicative of the relaxed regulations that are applied to people who are eligible for registration. Many of the early registrants, he said, were university or college students and able to interpret the new regulations for themselves. Our problem now, he said, is to get (continued on page 19....) MOBILE UNIT - continued from page 16
the message to the rest of the people who are in Canada without proper status, and to convince them to register. They have Manpower Minister Robert Andras' assurance that no one who is eligible for registration that who registers by the 15th of October will be penalized for the manner in which they came to Canada. The mobile unit will be in Terrace Bay on Friday, October 5th.
