Despite years of "economic anxiety" discourse, the core drivers of Trump support have always been bigotry and misinformation.

I’m curious: You know the people who we were told were angry and hateful and lashing out politically because being white wasn’t allowed anymore (🙄) and the country was changing and leaving them behind? Are they happy now? Spreading joy? Doing random acts of kindness?

I wrote about one of the many thoughts about Renee Good that’s been keeping me up at night https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2026/01/renee-good-killing-ice-watch-mom.html

So happy to share this beautiful, funny, sad, brutally honest essay by @kimmclarin.bsky.social. Save it for Saturday morning while you drink your coffee and have time to maybe cry a little bit https://slate.com/life/2026/01/dementia-alzheimers-elderly-parents-caregiving-grief.html
How to Mourn Your Living Mother
It’s like trying to read tea leaves at the bottom of a barrel on a boat on the ocean in the middle of a storm.

For a while I didn’t watch this because 1) why would I care about football and 2) the show is my enemy because it steals Joel’s
Saturdays, but I’ve been tuning in and they are actually all really delightful and have great chemistry (and I’m only biased about one of them!)

It’s thrown me off to learn that people keep track of how many books they read and I think they’re showing off! I’m sure it only takes 4 seconds but I can only fantasize about having my whole life together enough to do a voluntary administrative task

Dez had a really negative reaction to my explanation of Kwanzaa & I finally realized it was because “it’s an African American tradition”’is what I say (mostly to entertain myself) every time I put lotion on his face and he yells “Whyyy??!”

I guess it was sounding a little too similar 😂

@joelanderson.bsky.social to Dez (3): You know, Daddy used to race people when I was a kid
Dez: Would you be the winner?
Joel: 🤩🤩🤩😁😁😁☺️☺️☺️☺️🤗🤗🤗

Iykyk. Nobody has ever been happier to answer a question

Anyone from Chattanooga? I don’t normally answer super specific questions like this but I thought it would be fun to give this guy some concrete ideas for bars/restaurants/clubs/activities

Thank you! I have what I need for now and my inbox is overflowing with promising pitches. I told myself I would respond to each one but at this point (after midnight on Saturday, technically Sunday) I’m admitting defeat. Please accept my apology

This is a crazy thing to come on here and say given everything going on in the world but I have to get it off my chest:

People are selling “original artwork” on Facebook marketplace but it’s very clearly what they made at a sip ‘n paint

Seriously, like bro there are military troops in Washington DC RIGHT NOW cracking down on “crime“ that doesn’t even fucking exist. They don’t need an excuse, they will do it ANYWAY.
As someone with 20 years reporting on right wing and fascist movements, you should goddamn know well that it doesn't matter what anyone says or does, they're going to use this as an excuse for authoritarian crackdowns with little to no relevance to the actual crime.
If I have any credibility with you from 20 years of reporting on rightwing & fascist movements, please listen when I beg you not to celebrate Charlie Kirk getting shot. Leave aside morality: this isn’t a match in dry grass, it’s a torch. We do not want what this could ignite & we would not win.

I was extremely offline today and the out of context texts from people who reasonably assumed I was keeping up with the news were a wild ride

To the person sending multiple fake letters to Slate Advice: I am begging you to vary the voice, length, and sentence structure and take the drama down a notch to make the stories more realistic. I’m not against using the ones that are suspicious but actually good. Please just put some effort in

@joelanderson.bsky.social and I are both people who never got into anything related to superheroes but we don’t want the same fate for our three year old. What should we show him and when?

I just realized friends and family never ask me for help with writing stuff (cover letters, emails, applications, texts, etc.) anymore and I think it’s because of ChatGPT! I guess it’s fine but what do I have to offer now? 🥲

There's a terrible 5th Circuit opinion I'd like you all to see. Lots of people say we should "use conservative arguments against them," but you have to understand, FedSoc judges do not care about their own hypocrisy. They just write their way through it.

I know social media makes everything an adhd symptom but one I haven’t heard about is never being able to make it to the “link in bio.” I will just have to wonder what the article says because I’m going to get bored on the way there

I remember in 2020 the idea that we (not just people who lost someone to Covid or had it, but everyone) were all upset and down and struggling because of the pandemic and “racial tension” was kind of a media/ social media consensus.

And I’m not really seeing that now? I’ve been wondering why

I keep checking for an updated Harper’s letter with all the same signatories but I’m sure they’re just taking their time to make sure it captures how alarmed they are in this moment

I thought I was done with the culture shock of moving from CA to MD but I just asked a bunch of people how they air out their homes in the summer when it’s always hot and humid and the answer was mostly “we wait until fall”!!! I used to open windows every day of my life so this is a lot to digest
