UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

Not quite sure who I want to win tonight's ALDS game since they are both border towns and therefore honorary Canadians. But whatever. BRING IT! @bluejays.com #wantitall

Pretty much my reaction when anyone at the office suggests I use ChatGPT or some AI image generator. Good for him.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Keifer Sutherland is a grandson of Tommy Douglas, literally the greatest Canadian. It was thanks to Tommy that we have universal healthcare in Canada. This is the story Tommy would tell which resonates today just as it did 80 years ago.

Just had a by-election in Milton. Turnout was a pathetic 17%. One person pointed out that there were only 3 polling locations, none of them convenient for someone who doesn't drive. Made me think yeah, this might be how we keep electing people who drive everywhere and don't give a s**t abt transit.

The recent ICE raid which emptied an entire apartment building was apparently at the request of Wells Fargo, which is trying to foreclose on the building.

The building is in a 27 million dollar foreclosure filed by Wells Fargo. The next day, Wells Fargo filed an emergency motion for receivership. The fascist regime kindly emptied the building for donor Wells Fargo.

Oop! I meant 'Terry' (the other Terry Fox movie)

Fun Fact: my sister was part of the team that won a Gemini Award for erasing Shawn Ashmore's leg in The Terry Fox Story. During the awards ceremony while waiting to get into the reception (which had a cash bar btw because, Canada), she was serenaded by Walter Gretsky.

Happy birthday to Shawn Ashmore, born on this day in 1979 in Richmond, BC. He has starred in many productions including as Bobby Drake in the X-Men films, Terry Fox in Terry, Mike in The Following and Wesley in The Rookie. His twin brother is actor Aaron Ashmore.
This color promotional photograph features actor Shawn Ashmore, known for playing Bobby Drake / Iceman in 20th Century Fox's X-Men film series and FBI agent Mike Weston on the Fox series *The Following*, posing against a blue backdrop with the white "FOX" logo and zigzag patterns. He has short dark brown hair, striking blue eyes, a trimmed beard, and wears a black suit jacket over a black shirt with a silver chain necklace, gazing directly at the camera with a subtle smile.

The suburbs will be the death of us all. Unfortunately, politicians have come to realize that they can win elections relying solely on the suburban and rural vote, and throw city dwellers to the wolves.
jenfilmsmith.bsky.social
Also, they should probably consider what downtown city traffic and parking would look like if every single Skip and Doordash delivery was made by car.
jenfilmsmith.bsky.social
Part of the problem is that the media constantly portrays all e-bike riders as lunatic food delivery workers mowing pedestrians down on the sidewalk, with no acknowledgement of the middle-aged, overweight women with bad knees like me who are a not insignificant segment of e-bike users.
gravelinfluencer.bsky.social
This is the main issue I have with so much of the coverage around e-bikes. It's not that there aren't legitimate issues. But there is a panic around e-bikes and crickets regarding the daily toll of cars. And that's because the harm of cars is just accepted. It's baked into our society.

The deference we give to drivers is astonishing: speeding, blowing through red lights, crashing without a whisper; yet we jump on non-drivers the moment they step out of line.

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:

Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."
