I have taken
the freedom of speech
that was in
the Constitution

and which
you were probably
using
for peaceful protest

Forgive me
the courts said they were
so agitating
and so irritating
Trump: "We took the freedom of speech away because that's been through the courts and the courts said you have freedom of speech, but what has happened is when they burn a flag it agitates and irritates crowds."

Hegseth hasn't even lasted two Trusses yet, but I think he'll be gone in less than a Scaramucci. Break out the lettuce!

The elderly, ailing pope rallies sufficiently to be released from the hospital and make a final appearance on Easter before dying the following day.

Clearly, to some extent, we are able to choose the time of our passing. May he rest in peace, and may the words of his final speech ring in our ears.

The tariffs are catastrophic. But so too are the abuses of power, so is the corruption, so are the police state tactics, so is the destruction of our health care infrastructure, so are the ways our national security is being endangered, so are the attacks on our core freedoms.

Today, two Spanish-speaking immigrants are working on our landscaping. Our new stove was dropped off by another two. And I spoke to yet another on the phone to get a construction estimate.

So many lovely, hardworking people. I hate that we are making life harder and scarier for them.

Historians have a word for Germans who joined the Nazi party, not because they hated Jews, but out of a hope for restored patriotism, or a sense of economic anxiety, or a hope to preserve their religious values, or dislike of their opponents, or raw political opportunism, or convenience, or [cont]

Guernsey Scrabble rules:
- Games can be 7, 8, or 9 tiles
- 3 of one letter? You can trade one in
- You can look up stuff in the dictionary
- New twist: Barter Scrabble! You can trade a letter with an opponent

As you can see, we're mostly about having fun here in the Guernsey household.

Having watched with growing alarm the developments of the last 24 and 36 hours in Washington, I thought I’d take a stab at how the US media would cover this story if it was happening in a foreign country. Here’s that story that should be written this weekend: www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/musk-s-jun...
Musk's Junta Establishes Him as Head of Government
Imagining how we'd cover overseas what's happening to the U.S. right now

First they came for the trans people, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not trans.

Then they came for the immigrants, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not an immigrant.

Then they came for the minorities...

You all know how the story ends.

Yes! More of this! And follow it up with real action if the executive branch does not comply!

TikTok ban.
Impoundment Act.
Emoluments Clause.
Laws regarding Inspectors General.
Laws concerning firing people from the National Labor Relations Board.

The administration is violating the law at every turn. Congress' power is becoming more diluted by the moment. Call your representatives! Now!

This was one of the readings in church today. I thought, holy cow, Paul practically wrote the book on DEI! Just get a load of this reading from I Corinthians!

Third Sunday after the Epiphany
Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Savior Jesus Christ and proclaim to all people the Good News of his salvation, that we and the whole world may perceive the glory of his marvelous works; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Now this is what I call not obeying in advance. Today I am extra proud to be an Episcopalian.
Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde to Trump: "I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian, and transgender people in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives ... and the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals"

Oh yay yay yay, there is a way to avoid that stupid Google AI bot that is always at the top of the search results (and gives a ton of wrong answers!): just add -ai to the search string! HT to Sterling!
Not as a setting, but if you add -ai at the end of your search it does

Trump is trying to take credit for the Israel/Hamas ceasefire. That's BS, of course; it's the Biden administration that has been in there negotiating for months. BUT Trump's claim greatly ups the chances of ceasefire success...because now its failure would be Trump's failure.

First Musk takes Twitter down the drain...now we have Bezos with the Post and Patrick whatshisface with the LA Times. Billionaires destroying what used to be useful news sources. Ugh.
Jeff Bezos never wanted this cartoon to become public.

He killed it, and as a result, pulitzer prize editorial cartoonist Ann Telnaes quit.

Make sure everyone sees this cartoon.

Nice depiction of the desire to destroy other cultures. (Very tastefully timely, too, given the shootout of the Azeri flight.) Culture war is a useful political tool, and not just in the US.

Worth the listen! The diversity is amazing.
Merry Christmas Eve.

While preparing for holiday festivities yesterday I listened to over 100 recordings of my favorite traditional Christmas carol: God Rest You Merry Gentlemen.

Here's a thread of the top 7. I award extra points for creativity, fullness of sound, and house party appropriateness.

I'm pretty infectious-disease-savvy, but I learned some interesting things about poliovirus from this thread.
My replies are perpetually full of anti-vaxxers these days telling me about polio vaccines.

Not shockingly, most of what they are saying is wrong. Luckily, I trained with Vincent Racaniello & he taught me a few things about poliovirus.

So let’s discuss the king of the Picornaviridae👇🏻

Some people feel like the risks of vaccines don't outweigh the benefits. They feel safer choosing not to vaccinate because so many of the rest of us ARE vaccinated and thus they remain unlikely to get a terrible disease. Their ignorance is profoundly dangerous to us all.
Since everyone’s finding old and new friends, take a moment to read my story, I’m a 32yo polio survivor because I was not vaccinated. Pass on my story, repeat it, tell it to any vaccine hesitate parent. No kid deserves vaccine preventable diseases

Yep. We're about to ditch WaPo, as well. Already support NPR. Planning on supporting AP, Guardian, and ProPublica. Any other suggestions for support-worthy news organizations?
tldr: both the LA Times and Newsweek are offering illusory "fixes" for bias to distract you from the fact the U.S. press mostly has a center-right, pro-corporatist bent that reflects the bias of consolidated white male billionaire ownership and corporate power
