I did a similar thing with the Book History club at Texas Tech recently! I love the student involvement with experiential learning.

When the people at work are sitting around chatting or laughing it up in the hallways,

are they just

NOT in pain?

What is that even like?

Can we talk about the fact that at the high school where I currently teach in central Texas there has been 2 instances of N*zi vandalism in the last 2 weeks that I know of? Bless the kid who crossed it out, but my class set of annotation instructions:

I’m a complete failure: I earned my PhD in 2024 and the job I was able to get is in secondary (not higher) education. I continue to present at conferences and revise an article for publication while working 60 hours a week for teenagers who can barely write a paragraph.
It’s not the only field that does this to people — my research shows me that daily — but academia does it extraordinarily well.

(I definitely feel like I have not done much of note, dread my annual review & teaching evaluations, worry about my promotion dossier, among other things)
Academia has this way of making you feel utterly unsuccessful even when by any reasonable standard you are doing just fine.

FINISHED MY GRADING TODAY!
November 26, 2025 at 3:47 AM
Why does my depression always come at me when I have days off? I can't handle the slightest change to my routine. I'd rather be at work than have all this time to myself. I lie here thinking about all the things I need to do, and I fail at all of them because I cannot DO them. I'm frozen with dread.

Let the grading commence.

The incessant lower right abdominal stabbing pain, which had admittedly ceased (or at least reduced) for about 15 days, is back to full-time stabbing.
At pre-op appointment for scheduled post-Thanksgiving biopsy, I was told that at no point will the doctors be able to visualize the stabbing region.

went to the ER again after going to urgent care this morning.

why do doctors refuse to look at ALL of my symptoms together?

There are 4 AP-medieval positions to apply to this weekend.

Tomorrow and Friday are both dress-up days at the high school where I currently work. I'm trying to make this oppressive job as joyful as it can be, so I'll dress up.

Exhaustion.

But there are 4 positions I can apply to for next year.

Dear Internet,

Does drinking fizzy water work like scrubbing bubbles in my guts?

Hi

The job market is really grim.

Also it's too damn hot for October.

My 11th grade class is preparing to read "The Crucible" & I've had student group do background work on Arthur Miller, The Red Scare, the Witch Trials, Cancel Culture vs Backlisting & after each presentation I ask, "Does this feel relevant to our world now?" So far not a singler teenager sees it.

I got “selected” at work to be among the early adopters of an AI app for student writing & I stopped myself from saying “The house is unliveable because people have been tossing cookie dough at the walls all year. Your solution is to THROW MORE COOKIE DOUGH?! HOW IS THIS MEANT TO FIX ANYTHING? HUH?”

I have constant left-side-of-head pain, and doctors have ignored me about it for SO LONG that I normally just go about my day with this horrible pain. I once took Tylenol or Advil to take the edge off, but it never made the pain go away. Now I'm not allowed to take NSAIDs or Tylenol, so I just HURT.

I slept 18 hours on Saturday- Sunday

I graded for all my waking hours and I still have 100 essays to go

I have been "urgently" referred for a temporal artery biopsy

I think my job is literally killing me

I've been to urgent care and the Er twice in a week, and I have 2 biopsies forthcoming.

I feel like garbage, and although I have a stack of papers to grade that could construct a lifesize papier mache Empire State Building, I am going to take a nap instead.
