Here we go. Quick thread of American food critics of the 1950s surviving what they call "exotic" foods

There’s something fascinating about a movie that leans hard into the ambivalence of the romance plot, from Austen to Ephron and beyond. (FWIW, I loved it.)

"Materialists" gives an unsettling view of the contemporary dating scene, where a man's worth as a potential partner is largely determined by his salary. One longs for the good old romantic times of Jane Austin novels, when it was determined by the rents from his estates.

Fascinating observations by Diana Garvin about the adoption of electric cooking technology during the Fascist period of Italy (1922-1945) as facilitating the "gentrification of women's bodies"...really smart insights about the materiality of the fascist kitchen. #asfs40 #foodjustice2025
Fascinating provocation during this presentation at #asfs40 / #foodjustice2025: can you think of a single media product today (books, TV, movies) set in the future that is NOT a dystopia? (Note: The Jetsons doesn't count, since new episodes are no longer being produced...)

This is worth 3 minutes of your time. No one wants to eat at a restaurant that only serves bland chicken. (It’s not about chicken, or restaurants, tho)
I’m so so enjoying your recap of this
Ahhh would love to see you if I can kick this cold in time! Keep me posted.

Wow. This breaks my heart.
The head curator of Smithsonian Foodways, was instrumental in mentoring my career transition to food scholarship. I’ve also worked with some of the folkways curators who have helped me with my research.
The Smithsonian is more than an asset it’s a necessary archive.

As a Smithsonian Folkways recording artist who works in Black folk music, climate fiction and Afrofuturism: if you want my last two albums, buy them now. Fellow music scholars and archivists: if you're willing to put these in your institution's collection, please let me know so I can donate them.

What’s the best show on #Broadway RN offering lottery tix? I’ve already got #Gypsy for
Wednesday evening, but I can squeeze in a Tuesday show if I get lucky…
I am so so so happy about the #Oscars wins for #Anora tonight, for Mikey Madison's big win, and for elevating Sean Baker's work to a new level of visibility. This guy started making movies about marginalized people on his iPhone for almost no money. I can't wait to see what he does next.
I was teaching Peg Bracken’s I Hate to Cook book tonight and she said this almost verbatim.
Here's why #Anora is my favorite to win #BestPicture: Because it's about a scenario in which, when the world seems almost laughably upside down, all we can do is cling to our dignity & affirm who we are, even when it costs us everything.

And who can relate to that right now, right?
Hey #food folks--anyone live in Portland OR who might be willing to host me the night of June 17th? I'm flying into town for a conference and may need to spend one night in the city... let me know if you want to connect!
Weighing in with #Oscars thoughts: sad to see such talented actors squandered in mediocrity like Emilia Perez. But in things to be happy about: yay Sean Baker; yay to weird movies like The Substance; yay to living in the golden age of Colman Domingo (loved him since Passing Strange).
Yes yes yes—their correspondence is so good and such an amazing snapshot of how Julia clapped back at her conservative upbringing. Great piece!
In the post-AirBnb era, I need to ask here: anyone live in #NYC who needs a house sitter 3/11-3/13? Heading into town for a show, happy to pay!
I teach it in my Writing Cookbooks class, in the same unit as “Ad Hoc at Home,” to prompt discussions of access and “easy” cooking. Masterwork.
Sitting in on this exceptionally cool panel on commensality--how we are (or are not) the people we eat with (or don't)-- hosted by @gastronomica.bsky.social. We've talked about durian, wine, & sake (and the vomiting thereof), recipes as texts of omission, & setting the table as an act of separation.
I think it's because Bracken was brave enough to write an anti-cookbook that no one has truly emulated since then. (I wrote about this briefly in my Substack on the NYT list): frenchfriesandmartinis.substack.com/p/what-is-a-...
