Geographical distribution of observations from studies included in the final analysis. (A) P. brassicae resting spores under optimal conditions give rise to zoospores invading root hairs of a suitable Brassicaceae host plant, here Arabidopsis. Eventually the pathogen develops secondary zoospores that can be released into the soil and, after conjugation, form a uninucleate secondary plasmodium that re-infects the host (secondary/cortical infection). Secondary infection leads to development of a gall, that becomes conspicuous from as early as 10 DAI. Cellular events associated with gall formation during this stage include dynamic changes in cell cycle progression which result in hyperplasia. The stage between 10 and 19 DAI can be referred to as the proliferative phase of gall formation.
