News: Bari Weiss just sent a memo to staffers at CBS News asking them to produce a memo explaining "how you spend your working hours—and ideally, what you've made (or are making) that you're most proud of."

I'm seeing an increasing number of scams like the one below, leveraging the widespread problem of publishing scams w/ a faux service promising to fix problems author is having w/ the original scam but really to hit them up for more $$ (note the "Amazon partner agency" claim: there's no such thing)

Herschel figures out how to get in the building after the robot overlords are mysteriously deactivated.
“Bring up one of the manual power-loaders,” he said to the growing human crowd. His mind raced, as he tried to remember what he had seen in the shiny, hemispherical building in much earlier times. “Push one of the walkers up near that white area on the wall.” Herschel connected booster cables to the primitive >battery< of the old loader, then the other ends to studs on the head-sphere of the walker. He struck the head with his fist. Nothing. He prodded with small tools from one of his pockets at an access, but couldn’t get anything to work. The crowd murmured uncomfortably. He disconnected the cables, then reconnected them. A few lights on the head flashed briefly, then darkened. The white area on the dome vanished. “Hurry!” They pushed the walker and the dilapidated loader into the dome. A huge curved desk, apparently the work of a very unimaginative artist, loomed in the center of the outer chamber. After a time of prodding the inert walker and cycling its power, Herschel found the right combination. An image several man-heights high winked into the air in front of them. It was a visual display for the use of humans long ago, when they still worked in the central building. Another while with his cobbled controls, and Herschel was sure he was right. “They’re cheap.” Herschel announced. The crowd murmured. “A latent human failing,” He explained. “They rolled out two new models for our extinction event, that they didn’t have to pay for. They got more than they bargained for.”

The "rules" in Grammerly are sort of unimaginative, at best. I think keeping the app 100% "happy" would produce a rather stilted document by fiction standards.

Ha’k tried vainly to communicate with the pod. He rolled about in his sphere until he could see the top of the craft, and snapped back the armored hood.
The pod wasn’t damaged. It was gone. Where the pod and its coupler should have been, there was a shallow furrow in the hull, fringed with iridescent beads of recently molten composite. Strands of insulation and severed cabling snaked out in all directions from the gash in the outer hull. Ha’k could see the inner airlock door inside the breach.
The enemy’s parting shot was not a near >miss<. It was very accurate. Ironically, it was the fury of the final assault which foiled the Confederation’s purpose—the assassination of Josiah Smith.
If there had been time to transfer Josiah Smith to the pod…"

I queried the first book earlier this year, and got minimal response. Currently considering crowdfunding an editor and self-publishing--KDP, others. My online following is too tiny to make funding, advertising, or self-publishing likely to succeed (e.g.<4k on twitter/x after 16 years).
