Trying not to think about what it is too much. [ The interior of the walled area was a maze of narrow footpaths, winding among giant middens of rotting food and household goods, and heaps of wreckage—large and small devices he couldn’t guess the use of. Some of the heaps were almost as high as the wall. Some were steaming or burning. In less than an hour, he found a large metal shack, packed full of boxes of the cans. These had old, but still colorful paper wrapped around them. Some of the boxes contained small metal things—different than the ones the cultists had--and brown, crusty papers with pictures that explained how to use them to open the cans. He struggled to remember enough reading to figure out what was written on the paper wrapped around the cans, but found one with a picture that looked better than most. After a lot of effort, he peeled back about half the top of a can.]

Strands of insulation and severed cabling snaked out in all >direction<s from the gash in the outer hull. Ha’k could see the inner airlock door inside the breach.]

[ He commanded the giant ship to accelerate and leave stellar orbit toward the plotted departure point. He had to use conventional fusion propulsion, since they lacked accurate navigational information for the regular engines of Vassandrea’s ship this close to the intense gravity of the star. It would be several days before they reached the transit point, so Ha’k slowed his accelerated consciousness to the real >local< rate, and rested. They finally arrived at the departure point, and Ha’k engaged the new engine. Nothing happened. “Everything checks out,” Ha’k said, “but we’re not leaving.” “It takes several seconds to execute the instructions and engage,” sub-Main reported. “I believe real-Main would caution you to be patient.”]
