Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

Purchased a hard copy of the US constitution in Lexington, MA today. Given all the crazy stuff that’s happening in the world, it feels strangely comforting to own a copy that I know no one can change.

David Wallace-Wells is the best climate journalist working today, arguably the best journalist period, and this is a fantastic summary of where things stand on climate change:
It Isn’t Just the U.S. The Whole World Has Soured on Climate Politics.

Our democracy is not self-executing. It depends on us all as citizens, regardless of our political affiliations, to stand up and fight for the core values that have made this country the envy of the world.

We always get asked, "What can I *personally* do to help address climate change?"

Sadly, there hasn't been a very good answer to this question. Previous guides often treated people as monoliths, giving them a one-size-fits-all answer.

But that's changed now. Enter SHIFT.

MIT News writes today about our new paper: A simple linear model can outperform a large-scale AI foundation model in climate emulation. We offer an explanation with lessons on benchmarking, bias-variance tradeoff, and natural climate variability.

Why More Researchers Should be Content Creators

Just trying something new! I recorded one of my recent talks, sharing what I learned from starting as a small content creator.

We all benefit when there are more content creators!

As a guy who got a cancer that was probably caused by a virus, I think we should have /more/ vaccines.

The comment period for a sham “climate science” report commissioned by the DOE closed earlier this week, and the verdict is in: the scientific community has overwhelmingly and resoundingly rejected the report. UCS submitted comments on the report, and here are the four key points we made:
A Resounding Rejection of the US DOE’s Sham “Climate Science” Report
It is rife with inaccuracies and disinformation.

It might also make sense for scientists to collaborate on a science-first agenda for the next president (provided we are given the opportunity to elect one). Basically a counter to Project 2025 that’s ready to go on Day 0.

Would it make sense to leverage your institution and collaborate with other Stanford professors to incubate a batch of Stanford alumni willing and able to run for local/state/federal office in their home districts during the 2026 midterms?

This might make it a competition between universities 😉

I'm not sure many folks realize just how persistent the warming from CO2 is.

Here is a set of 1000-year climate model runs (using FaIR) simulating one year of CO2 emissions (40 gigatons in 2020); a millennia later the world has not cooled back down!
