Companions of Christmas: MERCURIUS ABU-SIFIN

Today (November 25) is the feast day of this Scythian-Romano soldier saint, who wields two swords: one with which to fight evil men, the other, given to him by the Archangel Michael, with which to fight demons, evil spirits, and monsters. 1/

On May 11, 1950, while working on the Rawlins National Bank in Wyoming, a construction crew unearthed a whiskey barrel that contained a human skeleton with its skull cap sawed off & an odd pair of shoes. Dr. Lillian Heath, now in her 80s, was asked if she knew anything about it...🧵

Ok palate cleanse time. In case you missed it, here's my most popular post ever
4 yrs ago today, a family member managed a truly spectacular own goal, splintered his domestic bliss, & in the process, united the world for a day.

On popular request, I shall now recreate the livetweet thread from that day

Paradise Lost: How Martin Scorsese’s ‘Casino’ Charts the Rise and Fall of a Criminal Empire—Revisiting a Masterpiece on Its 30th Anniversary • Cinephilia & Beyond
By Tim Pelan This story has to be on a big canvas. There’s no sense in my getting Bob De Niro and Joe Pesci and making a 90-minute picture about only one aspect of one story out of Vegas for the past ...

…he is also, in his way, a connoisseur of the curious, of those glimpses of another domain which are vouchsafed to certain individuals… -Mark Valentine The above quote is our first description of the man known only as the Connoisseur by amanuensis – and co-creator – Mark Valentine. Along with author John Howard, Valentine recorded twenty-four eerie exploits of the aesthetical detective extraordinaire, beginning with “The Effigies” in 1990. According to Valentine, while he wrote the first few stories himself, he and Howard shared co-writing duties for the rest. The Connoisseur is an odd figure; an iconoclast who disdains modernity, and embraces the archaic and unusual.

Screamers (1995) has an absolutely killer set-up: an ongoing war, uncertain lines of communication, and an unseen army of self-repairing, self-evolving killer robots taking advantage of the situation. It even has Peter Weller (Robocop, Buckaroo Banzai, etc.) as the world-weary officer attempting to bring an end to the fighting. What it doesn't have is much of a plot beyond that, sadly. Based on a Philip K. Dick short story, the film has all the makings of a classic like Blade Runner or Terminator, but doesn't quite clear the opening hurdle.
