In English we know it as “Carol of the Bells,” but the melody arises from a Ukrainian folk tradition of songs welcoming the new year and summoning the forces of nature to meet human labor and bring prosperity.
Do listen.
I wrote about the history here: snyder.substack.com/p/o-generous...
Another beautiful Shchedryk performance amidst ruins.

It was set in what used to be a DTEK thermal power plant — now destroyed by russia.

The contrast between russia’s destructive nature and the Ukrainian will to create beauty even in the darkest times is palpable.

Lying about the economy. Escalating violence in the Caribbean. Lashing out at his foes on Truth Social.

Trump’s mental instability was on full display this week.

It’s time to have a serious conversation about removing him from office.

holiday singing
After two very successful concerts of Lessons & Carols for Christmas on Thanksgiving weekend with the Madrigal Choir of Binghamton, a smaller ensemble prepared for two Christmas-themed performances on December 12th. In the afternoon, we sang at a local nursing home. In the evening, we sang as part of the Roberson Museum's Home for the Holidays exhibition. It had been many years since I had done this kind of small group singing out in the community.

💥UPDATE: we won!

NY Gov Kathy Hochul just SIGNED the bill to rescind a stupid subsidy for fracked gas: the hateful 100-ft rule, which forces all of us who pay utility bills to cover the cost of hooking up new homes to old gas lines. We save $6 million + incentivize electric.

“Solar is no longer just cheap daytime electricity, now it’s anytime dispatchable electricity,” said Rangelova. “This is a game-changer for countries with fast-growing demand and strong solar resources.”
This is incredible (good news too): “After a 40% fall in 2024 in battery equipment costs, it’s clear we’re on track for another major fall in 2025…The economics for batteries are unrecognizable, & the industry is only just getting to grips with this new paradigm”
www.pv-magazine.com/2025/12/12/b...
Batteries now cheap enough to make dispatchable solar economically feasible
Energy think tank Ember says utility-scale battery costs have fallen to $65/MWh outside China and the United States, enabling solar power to be delivered when needed.

The world's richest 0.001% now control 3x as much wealth as the entire bottom half of humanity combined.

56,000 wealthy individuals have more than roughly 4 billion people.

Read that back.
Just 0.001% hold three times the wealth of poorest half of humanity, report finds
Data from World Inequality Report also showed top 10% of income-earners earn more than the other 90%

If you wonder why the War Room outside Gov Hochul’s office, is, rn, filled with hundreds of sign-waving New Yorkers, this is why. Utility bills are MORE costly bc we pay for new gas hookups

Here at the US Capitol to talk with some senators about the risks and harms of carbon capture and storage, which is mostly used to extract more oil from ground, enjoys taxpayer subsidies, is prone to escape, threatens drinking water and public health, and is generally scammy.

Yet again, actual data show wind and solar are the least expensive power on the grid (and getting cheaper by the day). So the Trump administration is just lying about that.

And this is just getting started on a global basis.

2026 will be a fascinating year in the world of energy.
Energy transitions can happen faster than we think:

In 2000 almost 90% of Denmark's electricity was from fossil fuels.

In 2024 less than 10% of Danish electricity was from fossil fuels.

The Supreme Court’s Ethics Code Is a Joke. Big Oil Knows That.
Oil companies want the Supreme Court to intervene to dismiss lawsuits about climate change. Amy Coney Barrett and Samuel Alito both have big conflicts of interest on that front.
