But I also think (to @tpgroberts.bsky.social original point) the electorate is frequently addressed in a fundamentally different way to in the past because of changes in social scientific thinking and various other shifts. We are to be nudged not persuaded !

My new piece on Postman Pat: Special Delivery Service, and the neoliberalisation of Britain’s postal service. A little 🧵 on how this theme plays out in the show…

Postman Pat: Special Delivery Service (2008–2017)
The BBC’s readaptation of the adventures of Britain’s most famous fictional postman mirrored many concurrent neoliberal transformations of its postal service.

'She believed that her husband was one of those men whose memoirs should be written when they died.' Still finding this #Middlemarch re-read very amusing.

Definitely, even the weather! Sunshine matters. One of the reasons I really enjoy doing admissions is because it's like season 3 of Gilmore Girls. Open/offer holder days are full of enthusiastic people excited to go to uni, and the experiences they have with staff and student ambassadors are crucial

Is it still as 'riveting' as I remember? 🤣

“It matters that we understand the past and its complexities, […] because it helps us think critically, understand better, recognize complexity. …The inability or unwillingness of so many people around the world to recognize complexity is a really worrying trend.”

All famines are man-made, all famines are political. Historians of empire and humanitarianism have known this forever. Gaza is not starving, Gaza is being starved, by Israel, and this starvation is enabled by our government and by every other government that does not step in to force food and aid.

Why not! I am thinking of writing a grant proposal too.

This is exactly the answer I wanted to hear! There is hope yet. Which practices/assumptions do think this is most true of?

FYI if any growth is recorded for the month of July I can confirm that it has been driven entirely by the sale of Oasis tshirts and bucket hats in Manchester.

Wow. This is so interesting (depressing) thank you. I recently started noticing scholars in security studies, economics etc talking about having a history problem but not actually then speaking to any historians! 🙈

I have a PhD student writing about HR in this country, it's fascinating. I have a side interest in what hum-lead soc sci might look like (and the role of history in other disciplines) and was told last week that MBA students are taught that there are no 'lessons to be learnt' - is that right ?!

Another great thing about being a historian is that when I hear about a man spontaneously taking his trousers off at work my mind automatically goes to John Stuart Mill.

This, this, a thousand times this. Past students of mine will recognize something similar as one of my very favourite rants.

Okay, this is obviously lovely in lots of ways. However, the homogenisation of the British suffrage movement to only include the WSPU and their colours does an unacceptable disservice to the diverse and hugely significant contribution the many suffrage organisations who fought for (cont.)

This! A fair few of my Google scholar citations tell me that my book is being used to demonstrate that Edmund Burke *did* found modern conservatism in 1790 🤪
