History tells us that's traditionally the case. We're in stranger times is my belief. Manscara feels malleable and slippery enough he could morph to believably push whatever conspiracy the masses need to stay placated.

Regardless, shits bleak to even be considering all this as "What ifs?"

Smollett is sort of the go-to translation. Literal in nature as it may be, it's pretty good. If you enjoy it, may be worth a second read of a more modern "spirit of the work" translation like Burton Raffel's.
