People will say anything on here. “We used to be a proper country,” no we didn’t. That’s not true.

wonder if anyone has ever thought of analyzing a work like frankenstein. like, it might be about more than the monster frankenstein coming to life. what if it is about something hugely relevant to our lives, like llm's or grubhub.

it must be frustrating for all the people who worked doggedly to warn us all of the dangers of quicksand as children when we shrug it off like it isn't actually a big deal as adults. of course it feels like that. they were successful.

i don't understand this part of the market crash. are you meant to buy assets and hold them or like, stockpile food, or just hang out. do i need to find a new job cause streaming platforms are all going to shut down when it hits. what's good.

is there a term for the inefficiency where chips and dip are purchased separately and in uneven quantities, but both have expiration dates?

pretty sure i learned about felching when al franken used the early social internet to spread that he thought we should call the mixture ingested "santorum" after rick of that name.

noteworthy how rarely opportunity cost is recognized by smart people when talking about america. f.x. if the us had not claimed hegemony over much of the world post-ww2 someone else likely would have, and we don't actually know if that would be better or worse.

it is actually kind of weird to me how inconsequential llms have been on my life so far. the biggest thing is that social media is worse than before. and at some point in the next year or so i assume the entire world's economy will crash.

a repeating puzzle in my life is trying to express that i don't think we should act on prejudice or cruelty to people who believe that their actions are the only away to avoid prejudice and cruelty and that people who don't agree with them deserve to be treated with prejudice and cruelty.

informing people about broad cultural trends i have grown to understand through my research (reading and reacting to posts on an algorithm which only shows me things which make me mad).
November 21, 2025 at 4:01 PM
the "reacting to my first time [doing one of the most common things ever]" videos on youtube are so great. such an algorithmic paradox. like no, person with a phd in music, i do not actually believe this is the first time you've heard weezer in your life.

i play minecraft once a year maybe and i swear the stuff i have to do to open the game is different every time. this time i went curseforge -> select modpack -> launch -> microsoft page opened -> login via microsoft -> error 400(?) -> try again -> request code to email -> game launched.

mtg is actually historically good at dealing with problematic tents around lots of people.
Raskin: We are a big tent. We must be a huge, vast tent. I say this is a party that’s got room for Marjorie Taylor Greene if she wants to come over.

people keep talking about wanting ai to do dishes but like, no we don't. the reason ai is being introduced via online media is that it has no physical consequence when it fucks it up. if ai were good at the things it did we'd mostly be fine with it doing whatever.

not attributing this right now, but what do you think the chance is that the speaker is a white guy?

"we haven't said out loud why racism is bad in a while. or maybe we haven't said it at all correctly. racism is bad because it is easy"

As all this disgusting Epstein shit starts surfacing more and more, I hope we don't lose sight of the fact that apparently every major media outlet knew everything and instead spent their time money and energy attacking the trans community.

unfortunately shit like this does not blow up the NYTs somehow.
Wasn’t expecting the Epstein scandal to blow up the New York Times but sure, why not
To recap: Jeffrey Epstein offered a NY Times reporter photos taken in Epstein's kitchen of Donald Trump and girls in bikinis *and* implored the NYT reporter to put this information in the public discourse in 2015

What did the NY Times editors know about this offer?

it is kind of funny that the american argument for fahrenheit being sensible is that it maps to base 10 well.

it is very funny to me that my highest comment interaction video in quite a long time is a video of me doing an exam something like a month ago, which a bunch of people i've never spoken to before are convinced they need to backseat me for in the youtube comments of the recently published vod.

my ai understanding is:

- llm prediction is a cool tech that has been studied for 60+ years
- we've reached a point where putting $bn's into it crosses a relevant inflection point
- a large amount of [capitalism] is happening around this. (theft, exaggeration, bubbles)

i think that's about it?

one nice thing about social media showing me only immediate threats to the entire world is i don't have to worry about league of legends spoilers anymore
October 30, 2025 at 6:49 PM
the thing that gets me about climate change is that we don't actually know what happens if the world gets warmer. a lot of our convos are like "we need to limit to <3 degrees celcius warming by 2050" or something like that. some dude made that shit up. we don't know that. it's an informed guess.
