The Habsburg Netherlandish project of a united Low Countries was an impressive political failure that collapsed within two generations.

This is so cool: the ‘Pragmatic Sanction’ (1549) issued by Charles V who decided that the Habsburg Netherlands can only be ruled by one monarch and cannot be divided (well, that did not work out). Photo shared by @karldrabbe.bsky.social

I'm struck by how many news reports focus on which troops are taking winter quarters where. I don't remember that being as big a theme in previous years (though that may just be my memory playing tricks on me).

I was happy to see Forsythia get recognized in the recent Michelin unveiling for Philly. It's the only one of the starred/recommended restaurants we've been to more than once or twice. And the last time we were there it was only about half full, so I was getting a little nervous for them.

An interesting print series by Sandow Birk on the GWOT, inspired by Callot's Miseries and Calamities of War.

Some interesting thoughts here on how to model limits on grand strategy in the early modern era for a video game.
Funny, I haven't tried the Europa Universalis series. I wonder if I would learn something from it?
Well, my EU5 Netherlands run (starting as Holland) continues to go fairly well. It is 1574 and I just took Lubeck (from Sweden, oddly enough). I've vassalized Cologne and marginalized the Brussels trade center with my own in Amsterdam, so I now control 3 of the top 10 markets. 💰

Palaeography 🧵! Or why it can take a historian a while to confirm what they already suspected must be the case and not really get any further than they were—but this time with confidence 😂

I'm working with documents that list the incomes of medieval French lordships, so a lot of it is about grain.

Trying hard not to sound bitter, but I did write an English language thesis on firepower and the 17th century military revolution. It isn't included in the bibliography but several books by Henry Kissinger are. 😶
Well if I'm gonna try and tackle this book, I'm gonna need a frikkin drink. Or several.
