My article #Gendered #vulnerabilities and sexual #violence: Intersecting inequalities during the 2024 floods in #PortoAlegre, #Brazil was just published. This one was difficult to write, as it is such a sensitive theme, but I hope it can raise awareness.

New #article out, but this was not an easy one to write, as the #floods took place in my hometown and reading/writing about #gbv is never an easy task. I hope to at least be able to bring a bit of awareness to the issue of gender vulnerabilities during disasters.

New #article out, but this was a painful one to write.
“Elusive #closure” is how we describe the unresolved #grief of #immigrants who can’t attend loved ones’ funerals.
This is for anyone who, like me, has ever had to mourn from afar.

I grew up in a #car-centric city, and I hate cars. I lost family members to crashes. Their toxins make me allergic, they worsen #climate change, they create traffic jams, etc. I've been dreaming of cities with #tramways, #bikepaths, and #trees for most of my life. This picture is literally my dream.

We are at the end of the melt season in the #Antarctic (austral summer), which leaves most of the remaining sea ice across the Weddell Sea region. Here's a look at last month...

“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”
Finland ends homelessness and provides shelter for all in need - scoop.me
In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Why? The country applies the "Housing First" concept agains homelessness.

As an #academic from the #globalsouth, I try to use #decolonial and non-white authors to bring a #non-western perspective to my #research. #Reviewers VERY often ask me to cut/reduce the parts with those authors. This has NEVER happened with the Western authors I use. We need to do better.

Because of #chatgpt, I now see myself choosing simpler, more direct language, as AI usually does the opposite. There are also some words that nowadays cringe me, like "foster" "advocates" and "delve", as chat gpt overuses them. Has #AI also changed the way you write?

The rise of #chatGPT made me start appreciating finding misspelled words and/or "incorrect" grammar in #student's #essays, it is usually a good tell the work was written by a human, and not by #AI

I recently moved from Berlin to Luxembourg and the air feels lighter. Turns out it is not just a feeling, there are fewer pollutants here. This type of exposure is linked to 800.000 premature deaths/year in the continent (WEF). We cannot choose the air we breathe, we are being poisoned

I keep seeing scientists from various fields posting about data being deleted or removed by the U.S. government, and this is deeply alarming. +
7 datasets seem to have been removed from data.cdc.gov in the last hour, according to their API:

-Smoking Status by Race
-National Adult Tobacco Survey (NATS)
-Behavioral Risk Factor Data: Tobacco Use (2010 And Prior)
-Behavioral Risk Factor Data: Tobacco Use (2011 to present)

Climate change is here and pretending it is not can lead to horrifying consequences. We must invest in risk disaster assessment, response and recovery. Otherwise, when those disasters happen, we are left vulnerable in ways that could have been prevented.
Wildfires. Drought. Floods. Heatwaves.

Come hell and high water, inaction on climate adaption is no longer an option.

@unep.org #AdaptationGap Report shows we need a huge increase in adaptation finance, capacity-building & technology transfer.

All Al generated imagery is inherently theft. It's unethical, environmentally disastrous, and does irreparable harm to both artists and society.

Did you know? 94% of Rio Grande do Sul counties were affected by unprecedented floods in 2024, displacing 615k. Improvised shelters were created, but soon reports of gendered violence started to emerge. Yet, recent DRR policies from the state ignore gender
