What Makes Me Happy

my family, my writing, my breathing, the trees in my back yard, the way the deer wander through them slowly, cereal in the morning, wine in the evening, a back porch that is screened in, a granddaughter who loves to practice her ballet everywhere.
Drunk on wine and wind
Monk Ikkyu watches the waves
Wash the sorrow from his hands.

Ikkyū sits
in the marketplace
and tries to explain
everything:

Here’s what he says
to a soldier:

A tree is
the palm of my hand
and the face
of all there is
in the universe
to wonder about

It is the tree to heaven
and its roots start
in my heart and yours

Guzlowski remembers
the old days

It was great

There was no TV
no books no novels
no magazines

It was just him and God
And he was His pencil

Holocaust Deniers?

My mother and I once watched a 60 minutes program about Holocaust deniers.

I asked her what she thought.

My mother — who had spent 3 years as a slave laborer in Nazi Germany — said, they weren't there.

My dad, who spent four years in Buchenwald concentration camp and came to America as a refugee after the war, believed every 4th American was crazy.

If he were alive today, he’d probably be saying it’s ever third American.

All of us are so committed to the sea,

we have salt in our blood,

in our sweat,

in our tears.

We are tied to the ocean.

And when we go back to the

sea we are going back from

whence we came.” 🐚 🐢

at this ungodly hour
another empty thought
so full of dread
is filed away
its corner turned down
in the book of life
the question
how many more pages
before the end is revealed
it was light when i started
reading as the sun went down
another dawn
is the question
as yet unanswered

Refusing to love your neighbor is a fruit of Christian Nationalism. Christian Nationalism, above all else, is an ideology of self. Every Christian Nationalist worships not God but an idol that wears the face they see in the mirror.

When a body is so broken that it is entirely dependent on the care of others or a mind is basically gone, we are called to give dignity to what remains, for it still houses one created in the image of God.

A Window Story

430 in the morning.

With the light on,
all I see outside the window
is the darkness.

On the glass,
my reflection is dark too,
some light reflecting off my face
and off the shelves of books behind me.

A car passes by,
four lights swimming away

Nothing is different.
