I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.

Glad to share our benchmark study in Genome Biology on highly variable gene (HVG) selection methods for single-cell RNA-seq. We show that a hybrid strategy performs best, now implemented in the mixhvg R package. rdcu.be/eUfjt

Gift link, probably the funniest thing the Wall Street Journal has done this year.
We Let AI Run Our Office Vending Machine. It Lost Hundreds of Dollars.
An AI agent ran a snack operation in the WSJ newsroom. It gave away a free PlayStation, ordered a live fish—and taught us lessons about the future of AI.

This is shocking stuff. John Quackenbush has been brilliant since forever. www.statnews.com/2025/12/05/r...
His lab was humming with discovery. After one year under Trump, it’s almost silent
John Quackenbush built a lab that is at the forefront of human genetics research and bioinformatics. Trump administration cuts have put it in danger of collapse.

Will definitely include this example in my next talk on how to name files!

✅ Full marks for "make it easy to guess what the heck something is, based on it name".
Genuinely delighted to download a PhD thesis from a university repository where the author has neglected to remove the words "BITCH THIS IS YOUR THESIS" from the filename.

Looking forward to presenting duoNovo at ASHG this week.

We use long-read sequencing to detect de novo variants without having to sequence both parents. It's conceptually straightforward, and performs very accurately among variants likely to be clinically relevant.

Identification of de novo variants from parent-proband duos via long-read sequencing
While de novo variants cause many Mendelian disorders, their detection currently requires sequencing of the proband and both biological parents. This is not feasible when only one parent is available,...

I enjoyed reading the Introduction.

Despite the fact that the cover features neither a dragon, nor a spaceship, I have ordered a copy.

How can we know if it is worth reading without seeing the cover? I hope it has either a dragon or a space ship.
