Day 5 of #artadventcalendar and it's my mycoplasma picture, painted with acrylic paint on paper 🐡

I wanted to add some texture to diagrams of this bacterium, so I copied in a map of the village I grew up in.

Making this gave me lots of ideas for what to do next.

Day 5 of making proteins for #ArtAdventCalendar

Today it's HLA-2, which is critical for the immune system. They present fragments of extra-cellular proteins to CD4+ T cells, which can initiate a targeted immune response.

Day 4 of #ArtAdventCalendar I'm sharing...yes another bird. This was a commission for an owl lover in the States. I get equal parts nervous and excited with commissions, the age old imposter syndrome rears up but I've learnt to ignore it, mostly! I'd love to do more...

Day 3 #ArtAdventCalendar & #WIPWednesday • I'm currently working on a #SciArt #anatomy #embroidery about the scars and moles on my belly. I have the main body parts stitched in black on black and am working on the Milky Way to represent my hysterectomy scar.
Lia’s fingers show a wooden embroidery hoop with black linen with a rectangle of dissolvable material on which is printed the Milky Way in black and white with some red and blue markings. Some tiny single strand seed stitch and French knots in white, peach, oranges, and dark browns and grays have been stitched. Below the Milky Way is black on black whipped backstitch that looks a bit like flames, it’s pubic hair. An hourglass-shaped needle minder that reads “this is taking forever” is attached to the cloth.

Blackbird like in dimensions and shape but with a more finch like beak this bird is perched on a dark moss covered branch. It has quite a proud stance with head looking up to the right. With the side on view you can see the dark blue black feather colouring of the main body and wing which moves to more brown shade as you go towards the head. It has a lovely beady black eye and grey blue claws and legs. There are lots of little dark brown mossy branches weaving around and behind the bird that stand in stark contrast to the flat white background.

Day 3 of making proteins for #ArtAdventCalendar

Today I've been playing with Apolipoprotein B-100, which helps deliver fats. It wraps around a lipoprotein, and as cells extract triglycerides for energy, it shrinks and ApoB100's belts shrink to fit

Day 3 of #artadventcalendar and it's the poisonous Hooded Pitohui (Pitohui dichrous).

This bird carries a neurotoxin in its flesh and feathers, so I've drawn it in a jungle of neurons 🐡

Ooh hey #ArtAdventCalendar! I’m a day behind because of being busy & a bit broken.

This year I’m sticking to stuff I’ve made this year & I’m going chronological!

We’re starting back in January with something which started out with some leftover watercolours & some scrap paper
Mixed media piece giving alien planet vibes - large splotches of orange and pink watercolour on to which has been drawn in (from left to right, top to bottom) a tree with blossom, circular patterns, a sun with radiating rays, a group of jellyfish, some scallops, a bunch of open circles with abstract growths going up and down, purple slug like creatures, little jellyfish and some spirals. The whole design is very intricate with lots of patterns and accents.

Today was a good day. I was asked to clean this model of a leaf and they're going to let me rebuilt and repaint it 😎

You never know when those #sciart skills are going to come in useful!
Teaching model of a leaf of a dicotyledon. Paint is peeling and the plaster is showing in places. The cells are clear and stomata can be seen on the lower side in pink. The top and bottom cell layers are pale grey, whereas the cells in the middle are green.
