I'm not sure how many of these I'll manage, but I felt inspired by the first #invertober2025 prompt -

So here's my Japanese sea nettle (Chrysaora pacifica) with its tangly tentacles!

Watercolour and pastel pencil on paper, A4.

#invertober #sciart
Japanese sea nettle (Chrysaora pacifica). The bell is pale orange-pink with darker segments radiating out from its centre with dark purple or maroon edges. The tentacles are a similar colour to the bell and are tangly (difficult to draw!) against a turquoise (lower) and khaki green (upper) sea behind.

And flicking through images for inspiration. I had thought pancreas next, keeping on the theme of #pathology images as a starting point, and I found this from an old sketch book. I wonder if I've made #pancreas work before. I remember thinking it looks like underground caves 🐡
Pencil and felt-tip pen sketch of a cross-section through a body tissue. Colours are magenta, turquoise and blue, with red circles which are probably cell nuclei. Could be a map of underground caves.

Handwritten note reads: CELL /sel/ n small room esp. in monastery or prison; cavity or compartment in honeycomb etc.; Biol. unit of structure of organic matter; portion protoplasm usu. enclosed in membrane; group as nucleus of political activity; vessel containing electrodes for current-generation or electrolysis.

Now that my Backerkit Cell Painting Magnet campaign is wrapping up (will be literally wrapping up when I start shipping rewards!), I'm taking stock and deciding where next for my #painting. I've updated the portfolio pages on my website

I've discovered a new word: 'franticity'. Writing about a picnic in a sandstorm and reaching for a word to describe the 'frantic nature'. Thinking 'franticity' must be made-up but apparently it isn't...

Unless an LLM somewhere is trying to convince me the word is real, which is also sadly possible.

300 mauve stingers, or palagia noctiluca, were recorded off an Anglesey beach last week, and also as far south as Pembrokeshire.

The Marine Conservation Society said the appearance of a warm water species in the UK is "not surprising" as sea temperatures here rise.

The very rare hydrocarbon mineral carparthite (exceptionally pure coronene C24H12) is fluorescent but tugtupite is called “King of Fluorescent Minerals,” plus it’s tenebrescent (changes colour in UV) & phosphorescent so gains my physics vote plus it’s also a gem on the arts front #MinCup25 #scicomm
Two images of carpathite under regular light and UV to show its fluorescence via mindat.org. Under regular light the rock looks grey and rust with some visible white and lime thin linear crystals, while under UV the crystals glow an intense blue. The Smithsonian acquired two “ulu” silver pendants with tugtupite cabochons (ulu is an all-purpose knife traditionally used by Inuit, Yupik, and Aleut women), designed and created by Mike Møller. These are the first tugtupite gems acquired for the National Gem Collection. https://naturalhistory.si.edu/object/nmnhmineralsciences_14272125?geogallery=Tugtupite&node=14624 Tugtupite

Oval Cut
15.10 x 9.50 x 6.50 mm

The same oval cabuchon is shown under regular light as white and blood red and under UV as scarlet and burgundy, against a black background.
