I shared some context with the Washington Post (whose education team survived the mass layoffs) on the Trump administration's efforts to go after the National Student Clearinghouse and NSLVE. I expect red-state publics to drop out of what used to be a bipartisan effort.

The Education Department said it received complaints Tufts University and the National Student Clearinghouse shared private student data with political groups to influence elections.

Every journalist whose theat model includes this administration/the federal government needs to be aware of this. Signal for desktop + touch ID + they have a warrant = the feds can read any of your signal messages that haven't disappeared.
The FBI was able to access Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson's Signal messages because she used Signal on her work laptop. The laptop accepted Touch ID for authentication, meaning the agents were allowed to require her to unlock it. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

My new column examines how thinking locally—and leveraging free data resources for civic organizing—is one of the most effective avenues for responding to the current threats to democracy.

Leveraging Data Resources for Civic Organizing
Pluralistic, democratic ideals are under direct threat from disinformation, authoritarianism, and polarization. While the scale of these challenges is global, thinking locally remains vital.

I'm seeing people wonder why ICE is going after Charlotte.

ICE has been at war with Charlotte's sheriff ever since he won in 2018.

We'd covered this at Bolts back in the day; this quote is from that sheriff:
“When the 8 African American sheriffs took over the largest counties in North Carolina, it became a threat to the good ol’ boy system,” says the sheriff of Charlotte. These new sheriffs broke ties with ICE.

But GOP lawmakers cracked down this week, overbidding the governor’s veto to adopt this law:
North Carolina GOP Is Cracking Down on the Black Sheriffs Who Stood Up to ICE
Boosted by new supermajorities, Republicans are closing in on legislation to mandate more collaboration with ICE and preempt local policies hard-won by immigrants’ rights advocates.

Why? It's not because it's a bad idea or that it didn't work.

It's because TurboTax's parent company spent decades trying to make sure they controlled the e-filing market:

It can often feel like there's a whole lot outside our control.

But if there's any kind of election in your town today, that's a way to make a meaningful difference in your state or local affairs.
Today I’m voting for school board. Keep the local MAGA out. Keep the ABA teacher with no real information about her out too (IYKYK).

Your local election for boards and judges and funding and so forth really do matter. Go vote!
