How do you think we get to good, wide spread AI etiquette? Is it even possible? I feel like it only takes a small minority “playing the numbers game” to ruin it for the rest of us
I’m hopeful that most people will figure it out pretty quick, when they see that nobody is reacting well to their messages. And hopefully we start establishing some norms around AI etiquette.

🙋‍♂️me!

I really don’t see the appeal in “spec driven development”. I love the feeling of hand typing 1000 LoC and having it work first try. I love the feeling of fighting the linter or type checker or borrow checker to get that def just right. I love landing on an elegant api design. I like coding

“AI optimism requires you to see yourself and your loved ones as safe from AI; as the passengers in the self-driving car, and not as the pedestrians it might run over.”

Please read this. And send it your AI optimist friends and family.
I have a lot of thoughts on AI.

I've been working on this post for a couple of months now. It's very personal, characteristically lengthy, and sure to be at least somewhat controversial. Take it (or don't) as you will.

AI optimism is a class privilege
I think I have an idea why we're so extremely divided on AI: it's because we have an intuitive sense of who it stands to benefit, and who stands to pay the costs. I think whether you see reason for op...

Every bad use of AI: getting AI to do something you *can* do but *don’t want* to

Vibe coding, cheating in school, the fucking neo robot

Every good use of AI: getting AI to help you do something you *want* to do but *can’t*

Curing diseases, predicting weather, learning new skills

In an interview this week, when the candidate couldn’t answer any of my questions they said “I don’t know syntax, I use AI to do all that.” When I pressed him on that he assured me he always gets a second AI to check the first’s work.

I wish I had this thread to give him in that exact moment
Here’s a question I get a lot:

> “Now that AI can generate front-end UIs for us, what’s the point of learning CSS ourselves?”

I think there are lots of reasons, including that you can use AI much more effectively if you understand CSS yourself.

But is that actually true? Let’s discuss. 🧵

A lot of folks know me for one or two posts, and might not know I've created nine (9!) visual explanations of computer science topics, aimed at practitioners.

If you're looking for things to read this Thanksgiving, I think you'll love them.

Computer science is a lot of fun, when explained well. ❤️

We need to stop saying JavaScript was originally designed in 10 days. Todays JavaScript is basically unrecognizable from the first version in 95. Thats ignoring the 30yrs of work gone into it. Its a living language constantly evolving. Why do you think you have to keep updating your goddamn packages

14. money only matters until it doesn't

only focus on making more money until it stops being a constant source of stress (e.g. grocery store math, scrambling to make bills). beyond that, money only matters as far as it helps you live a life you enjoy. dying on a giant pile of cash sounds miserable

This take is needlessly inflammatory. Yes misinformation from LLMs is a problem, but misinformation has always been a problem. ChatGPT is different in magnitude but not different kind. We’ll get through it with media literacy and research skills not by outright rejecting the technology

Boss made a dollar,
Grandad made a dime.
But that was a poem
From a simpler time.

Boss made a thousand,
Gave my Dad a cent.
But that coin paid the mortgage,
Or at least it paid the rent.

Now bosses make a billion,
And give us workers jack.
Then smugly blame society,
For the labor that they lack.

Reminder Superman is not a power fantasy, he's an altruism fantasy.

The idea of someone with godlike powers using them solely for good (with an antagonist who is a billionaire, who by definition do the opposite) was dreamt up by Jewish kids in the 30s and its just as if not more relevant now.
