I’ve always been so proud to be at UCLA, not because of any nonsense from administration, but because its diversity is energetic, uncontained, explosive. When I meet my new students, I feel I know them, because I grew up in the same California as them. I think that’s what this admin hates.

Something I didn't get to say yesterday:

We heard over and over during the event about "human-centered" approaches to "AI". But if refusal is not on the table (at every level: individual students and teachers right up through UNESCO) then we have in fact centered the technology, not the people.

My video about how LLMs are not search engines has led to many, MANY comments telling me that I should be using Perplexity. Some insisting that Perplexity does not hallucinate.

Out of a list of 26 papers it just provided me (in "Research" mode) 4 were real. FOUR. 85% hallucination rate.

In “Against AI: Critical Refusal in the Library,” I examine LIS as in need of a values-realignment, asking readers to refuse the technosolutionism we are so often offered in place of human-centered possibilities, like taking racism, climate change, and labor rights seriously

Just one person in that room who knows how irresponsible it is to use LLMs for X task, how harmful its use is, can make a difference in these meetings. I know this bc of the number of ppl who have told me about these meetings bc of the stuff I’ve published.
