An essential read as federal health officials work to undermine confidence in one of the most effective and safe vaccines available. There is no reason that so many are getting sickened and dying of measles.

Alicia Hastey really sums up the core essence of journalism in her note. Good journalism adheres to standards. Stick to those standards, regardless of what labels others put on you.
NEW: “CBS Evening News” producer Alicia Hastey sends a bombshell farewell note:

Stories are “evaluated not just on their journalistic merit but on whether they conform to a shifting set of ideological expectations.”

The video of the latest ICE shooting starts by showing several agents wrestling a man to the ground. If you see that sort of video autoplaying on your feed and don't want to see someone killed, you have a few seconds to scroll past it or hit stop.

Once again, because of the actions of ICE agents in Minnesota, I feel the need to share this again: You can turn off autoplay in the "Content and media" settings or toggle sound off by default if you don't want to see/hear these videos.

It would be a service to their readers if CNN and others who run these pieces would note that under New Hampshire state law, it will hold the first primary. This story notes that the DNC "demoted New Hampshire" last time around but doesn't toss in a sentence to say that it went first anyways.

Officials in Maine are growing increasingly concerned that ICE is planning major actions in that state.
BREAKING — Mayor of Lewiston, Maine posts on FB that ICE is coming to the city imminently. This confirms my reporting the agency is planning a surge in the city and state generally.

Lewiston is home to a large Somali-American population, which made up 4.6% of the population as of the 2020 census.

A corrective to much of the reporting on CES.
I've seen some bullshit at CES, but I've never seen such an aggressive gaslighting - AI that doesn't work but is reported as if it does, robots that do not exist that are discussed as if they do, broken demos that are reported as functional. It's a disgrace, I am disgusted.

The cellphone video taken by the ICE officer who shot Renee Good in Minneapolis has been released. It is being shared widely. So, another reminder that you can turn off autoplay in the "Content and media" settings or toggle sound off by default if you don't want to see/hear these videos.

The BCA's Force Investigations Unit was established after the murder of George Floyd to provide unbiased investigations into uses of force by law enforcement. The BCA says it will be ready to reengage if the FBI changes course again and seeks a transparent joint investigation into the ICE shooting.
Minnesota officials say the feds have blocked them from investigating ICE shooting

The NY Times does some of the best video analysis out there. This one is based on videos that have been shared publicly, so there may be additional videos (including one taken by the shooter) that could shed additional light on what happened in Minneapolis. This is disturbing video.
Video: Videos Contradict Trump Administration Account of ICE Shooting in Minneapolis
An analysis of footage from three camera angles shows that the motorist was driving away from — not toward — a federal officer when he opened fire.

An interesting thread. Law enforcement agencies commonly consider it an assault when a car heads toward them or if a car takes off when an officer has their hand on the door. And the law backs them up and could apply to that first shot in MN. But there were other shots fired...
My initial take on the criminal law governing the ICE shooting in MN:
609.066 of the MN Code controls a self-defense claim for a "peace officer" under state law. I'm not going to consider federal law given the capture of the DOJ by the Trump administration. 1/

The mother of the woman killed by ICE has identified her as Renee Nicole Good, 37, saying she lived in the Twin Cities with her partner. Other reports have said the passenger in the vehicle identified her as her wife and said they have a 6-year-old child, though that is not in this report right now.

Minneapolis officials are giving a live press conference on the shooting. Mayor Jacob Frey comments on the DHS statement saying that the driver was engaged in domestic terrorism: "This is bullshit." Later: "To ICE -- get the (f---) out of our city."

There are at least two videos going around of the ICE shooting of a woman in Minneapolis. One clearly shows the officer firing into the woman's vehicle. You can turn off autoplay in the "Content and media" settings or toggle sound off by default if you don't want to see/hear these videos.

I don't believe President Trump's DNI Tulsi Gabbard has said anything on the record about the recent U.S. actions in Venezuela. When she campaigned for president here in New Hampshire, she had a lot to say on the matter.

For a moment, I read the word of the year as "stop," which also felt appropriate for 2025.

Some have argued to me strongly that even if Loeb is wrong, he’s getting people interested in 3I/ATLAS and that’s a good thing for science.

But Loeb isn't just wrong, he's recklessly following an old playbook that got 39 people killed in 1997.

Loeb’s Behavior is Reckless
I’ve largely ignored Loeb for the past few weeks. When he started in on his 3I/ATLAS thing, there were plenty of mainstream media outlets willing to give his claims a wide and credulous platform, and ...

Several of the climate change pages on the EPA.gov website have been recently altered to remove or reduce discussion of the human causes of climate change. These changes mean that the site cannot be considered to be scientifically accurate on this issue.
It appears that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has, within the past week, scrubbed a large amount of climate change content from its official website, as well as *removed human-caused warming* from the discussion on its "causes of climate change" page.

I have never turned on Apple Intelligence on my MacBook (don't plan to), so I don't see things like this. But it seems like Apple should provide a way for developers to exclude such "features" if they don't want them.
a) this fucking sucks, wtf Apple?

b) anybody got the link avail, the one about how to remove this?
Not satisfied with just destroying their own brand goodwill, OS companies are now using AI to try to destroy the good names of the apps users install. (Scrivener taking out adds to explain how it has no AI but Apple adds some anyway.)
