"Canadians have never been richer and more miserable at the same time."

That's a good lede right there.

Forget a recession. What Canadians are living through is worse
So what if the data show the country has technically been spared from a recession? The average household feels like it’s already in one

Good article about how streamers are alienating viewers by trying to draw out tension.

The article is about Stranger Things, but it’s a curse that has affected Squid Game, Sweet Tooth and any number of other shows.

‘Stranger Things’ Is Proof the TV Release Model Has Changed — for the Worse
Opinion: Instead of increasing anticipation, the series' protracted release schedule has lessened it, arguably breeding indifference among its fandom.

I've started regularly asking a civil servant friend, "Who's mad at you today?"

The fun thing about the question is he always has an answer. The challenge on his end is sorting through the various people who are mad at him and choosing the maddest or most interestingly-mad one.

“According to oral family lore, Robert King’s biological father − Thomas King’s grandfather − was actually Elvin Hunt, whom the family believed was of Cherokee ancestry.”

Even if he was, it’s a remarkably weak tie to base your whole public identity on.

I hadn't given it much thoughts until now but I just learned that there is a reason why in most French-speaking countries 'eighty' is 'quatre-vingts' -- literally 'four twenties' -- and that reason is the ghostly presence of the ancient Gauls' base 20 counting system.

We may very well be headed towards a public debate over whether raping children is bad. If so, it will be an important test for the media to speak in plain language.

This piece in The Walrus argues that if Quebec wants to survive and flourish culturally in the digital age, it needs to adapt a new, younger vision of QC identity.

Bellingcat’s contact email has always been a magnet for people with fairly unusual views; paranoid delusions, sprawling conspiracies, the works. But recently, the pattern has shifted, we’re seeing more and more emails clearly written with ChatGPT.

I started listening to this podcast Wisecrack. It’s a true crime show, but most of the first 2 episodes are made up of a stand-up comedy set, running for minutes at a time without interruption from the host. And it’s totally compelling.

I always appreciate podcasts that try new things. Recommended!

I’m pretty jazzed to have 2 shows on Apple’s Best podcasts of 2025 list.

Tubby is a small show from a new company with no business plan behind it. We didn’t know if anyone would listen. So it’s cool to see this!

I love this idea:

“anytime a billionaire is asked for public comment on anything, someone with < $1,000 in the bank should get equal time to offer a rebuttal.”
In this week's newsletter I wrote about losing a parent (to bad politics) and good tv shows and the billionaires who pretend they're going to leave a city if their taxes go up by an amount that will never make their lives worse.

Why wouldn't the NDP say?
45 minutes or so until the vote on the budget, when we find out if we're having another election. Elizabeth May says she's voting with the Government, which means they need one more vote or two people to abstain. The NDP won't say what they're doing.

But surely if they're only investigating Democrats, they can still release all the files about Trump
Trump knows they're not going to share evidence in an ongoing investigation. So what does he do? He orders the DOJ to investigate Epstein-Dem connections to effectively lock away the files, then urges release of the files to create the false image of innocence. Don't be fooled.
