A year ago, something happened that I never expected: I saw the northern lights in Texas, at a latitude that’s further south than Cairo, Egypt. This deep pink glow was visible to the naked eye.

Two of my worst sensory sensitivities are 1) the sound and sensation of clipping my fingernails and 2) the feeling of said nails growing long enough to extend past my fingertips. This is, as you can imagine, terribly convenient.

My ancestors mostly came from Ireland, and that theme in Sinners hit hard. I’m descended from victims who became perpetrators and did to others what had been done to them (and worse). I think the only chance for folks like me to break out of that ongoing cycle is to see it clearly and FIGHT it.

People on r/fantasy keep asking “Why is modern fantasy all so UNORIGINAL and BORING,” and I immediately assume they must not be reading, say, N.K. Jemisin or Vajra Chandrasekera or Simon Jimenez or Premee Mohamed or anything published by Neon Hemlock, and frankly that sounds like a them problem.
