OK, this is wild.
In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them.
It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*.
What the HELL?

Whenever anyone laments the state we’re in, they’re met with a chorus of “but what do we do?” As plenty of good options are available, this response might often be wilful impotence*.
I invite you all to nominate in this thread the best proposals and practices, around which we should gather. Thanks

The criminal oligarch class and their greedy minions are basically doing to the United States what they’ve done to many other countries over the years, often in our name.
I have to say it very much sucks.

I live in SoCal but for some reason have read a lot more about how king tides are affecting Florida than I have read about king tides on the west coast. The California King Tides Project on blue sky is helping me rectify that. :). This is from yesterday:

Whoahh! This is Bellevue in Washington. A bomb cyclone is wreaking havoc in the northwest U.S. and Canada, toppling trees and cutting power to hundreds of thousands. One death reported.

For me, the most incredible artefacts from the ancient world are the letters people wrote on clay tablets and sent to one another over thousands of years in Mesopotamia, going back to more than 5,000 years ago.
They contain recognisable humanity, warmth and humour. Here's a thread of my favourites.

A couple folks have asked me to add them to the MENA list when they were already on it, and this is a good way to check

Interesting thread on california king tides
For #kingtide I’m sharing a “micro field guide” here to recognizing groundwater-driven flooding in coastal cities. Here we go- first up, a maintenance hole in San Leandro CA, where groundwater creates a tiny fountain at high tide.

When you use a red push pin emoji as a bookmark (see how below), add a few words about what you’re bookmarking.
Otherwise you’ll go to your bookmark feed, see a bunch of pins, and have no idea what content they’re related to without clicking through. (Learned this the hard way, lol.)

Big Oil, gas, and coal companies are responsible for the extreme weather now ravaging communities around the world on a daily basis.
Yet they are still profiting AND sticking us with the bill.
How can we #makepolluterspay?
