When she’s ready, Ori takes up the mandolin from where it rests against the vanity and steps around the screen. As she swings her instrument onto her back, she glances up to find Astarion sitting at the foot of their shared bed, shirtless and in his sleep trousers. His expression is distant as he stares straight ahead, profile backlit from the window behind him. Ori’s always been more a pragmatist than a romantic, but he nonetheless takes her breath away. She’s been with more than a handful of beautiful people, and it isn’t that Astarion is the most beautiful. It’s that he’s what her soul wants. Her heart aches in her chest at the sight, then at the stray thought of him young and alive, eyes bright and skin warm. How could anyone he set his sights on ever have stood a chance? The Baldur’s Gate of two centuries past must’ve been littered with broken hearts. But that wasn’t the man she loves. The man she loves is the one before her now. Sadder. Haunted. Bitter. But just as beautiful. She doesn’t want to lose him. Cazador can’t have him. Neither can Belladawn. Whatever happens after that… she’ll deal with it when they get there.
