Air raid sirens howling in a completely dark city is some kind of cinematic horror. It’s mornings like this when it’s remarkably hard to believe in any possible better future, I just feel like we’re alone and this is it

No no an honest mistake, I actually think the ICJ would be a better choice.

An extremely proud day for Hungarians. I just really hope Orbán’s proxies won’t launch a smear campaign, since Krasznahorkai is an outspoken critic of contemporary fascism, far-right politics, and Viktor Orbán himself.

How many trillions of dollars have been invested into this technology so far?

President of Ukrainian PEN Volodymyr Yermolenko wrote a post about Yulia Navalny's recent column for The Economist and made a full description of the policies of the Russian opposition.
I translated this post into English and would like you to read it.

Yulia Navalnaya, The Economist and Russian opposition

Italian journalist abducted from the flotilla describes how Israeli prison guards unleashed dogs into cells, poured bleach on mattresses, and overcrowded cells
such that it was impossible to lie down.

x.com/paolomossett...
That night the guards were even more violent. The consul had just left, having gathered more deportation signatures, when special forces burst in. They stormed the cells, pointed rifles at us with laser sights, and called roll. In some cells, they unleashed dogs. In one, they found the word “Palestine” spelled out using scraps of pepper and water. To erase it, they poured bleach on the floor — prisoners slept on mattresses soaked with it.

That night, as punishment, they overcrowded the cells: from ten people to fifteen, leaving no space to lie down. We turned the mattresses sideways so we could all rest our heads. In my cell were Maso Notarianni and a Lombardy Democratic Party councilor, Paolo Romano.

I had the feeling I was in a truly barbaric place, and hoped this barbarity would soon end.

US-style neoliberalism interpellates everyone as a customer, which means consumer agency replaces any other form of political agency.

I remember being told that this whole fake Brexit referendum is just a strategic move to ensure that the ultra-right wing of Tories and Farage will disappear from the mainstream of shaping British politics for a generation, if not two. Some of the people who told me that still have six-digit jobs.

For all the haters; the current Dutch cabinet is just a keeper. After the coalition collapsed, they merely take care of the country before the new government is formed. And by constitutional custom, they are not allowed to make any major decisions or policy changes. Hence this announcement.

I think that’s an excellent point. It also raises a question of the standard of goodness in these two different contexts and how it is established. And sure, there are many more variables involved here beyond the actual composition of our diets.

To me, this is similar to electric cars. Cars with combustion engines should still be available; in many circumstances they are preferable or even non-optional. But there are strong policy reasons to promote more environmentally friendly option, even if overall it is suboptimal.
