this book is not easily quotable since it builds layered arguments based on analysis of historical critics (incl their many failings) but i finally found a good layup

AI generated content of any kind undermines the credibility of whatever is being communicated
I don’t know if anyone else notices or cares, but when I see a presentation in which the speaker uses obviously generated-AI images to illustrate their slides, it makes me immediately less confident in whatever other content they’re presenting.

me, muttering: where's my book on quality in art?

thomas: what's it called

me: On Quality in Art

thomas: bit on the nose, eh

Because this is a thing that happens on here, if you don't want someone to criticize you maybe don't double down on objectively wrong opinions.

While we're wailingly wallow in words, reminder that the vernacular use of “moron” and “imbecile” have direct roots in the 20th century eugenicist movement. So maybe don’t use these words.
There’s some weird discourse about how referring to Americans as Americans is somehow wrong.

Let me introduce to the amazing concept of words:

They can have multiple meanings!
The meanings change over time!
Multiple different words can refer to the same thing!

I'm sure the increasingly aggressive promotion of 'AI' features in every single piece of software, app, or service I use, including disregarding previous opt-out settings and forcibly opting me in, has nothing to do with this!
Multiple surveys are telling the same story: AI adoption has stalled. Census data shows ~11% of workers use AI, with rates falling at 250+ employee firms. Surveys show usage spiked then plateaued.

Meanwhile Big Tech is planning $5T in AI spend by 2030 that needs $650B/year in revenue vs ~$50B today
Investors expect AI use to soar. That’s not happening
Recent surveys point to flatlining business adoption

“shouldn’t we just not judge art?”

(you can reply here but don’t go hassle the person)
this is a child’s viewpoint.

all art is craft. craft is about skills, technique, execution, historical evolution and influences, etc.

it’s immature and ignorant to ignore that so you feel better

"Runctitiononal features"? "Medical fymblal"? "1 Tol Line storee"? This gets worse the longer you look at it. But it's got to be good, because it was published in Nature Scientific Reports last week: www.nature.com/articles/s41... h/t @asa.tsbalans.se

Budgets, in 2025 dollars:

Top Gun: $44M
Hunt for Red October: $99M
Top Gun Maverick: $195M
it’s so painful to watch good old movies where people took their jobs seriously (and were given the time (?) to do so) and modern stuff where everything is surface-level amateur crap

i know some shitty modern movies are due to the funding environment but MAVERICK did not have that problem

If you need something and Black Friday is the only time you can afford it or the only time you think it’s worth the price—please go ahead and buy it.

Doubly so if it’s something that helps you for a disability or maybe something that helps you free up time in your life for fun things.
