Excited about my latest publication in Qualitative Sociology! I explore how Black residents in a resource scarce ”desert” perceive access to groceries, pharmacies, and parks and why their lived realities often diverge from GIS-based assessments of access. doi.org/10.1007/s111... DM me for a link!

Neighborhood resource access is a critical determinant of health and well-being, yet traditional measures often overlook the subjective experiences of residents in under-resourced areas. This study ex...

Happy Black History Month! Here is my favorite story about a Black American you may not know about: Robert Smalls. He commandeered a confederate ship and sailed himself, his family, and the other enslaved crew and their families to freedom. THROUGH waters controlled by the Confederacy.

When you can only win with disinformation, data become a threat.

The CDC’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey has monitored the wellbeing of America’s high school students since 1991.

Since 2015, it’s been a vital source of data on LGBQ youth. In 2023, it provided the first ever nationally representative sample of transgender teens.

As of this morning, it’s gone.

Hey if anyone is considering backing up any datasets for some reason today, the Open Science Framework has free storage up to 5G/private repository, and up to 50G/public repository.

(The OSF is run by a 501c3 (Center for Open Science), so if you do this you might also consider making a donation.)

I am not sure who needs to hear this, but if you are a scholar who uses state or federal public health data sets, you might want to download them to your computer before they disappear.

And Stanford is right. Don't acquiesce in advance. Don't obey illegal orders.

This is worth comparing with the Stanford "no changes necessary" thing earlier today someone posted--two major private universities with exactly the opposite instructions to researchers.

I talked to the Black residents of Altadena who say they’ve lost everything but hope.

“When you escape tragedy, you say, ‘it could have got me.’ It didn’t. So I’m going to keep on going,” said 83-year-old Walt Butler.

Secondhand cars kill. Especially children.

Like smoking a cigarette, driving a giant SUV/pickup endangers anyone nearby.

The narrative power of secondhand smoke galvanized the anti-tobacco movement in the 1980s – and it could do the same for car bloat today.

My deep dive, in Vox 🧵

Gigantic SUVs are a public health threat. Why don’t we treat them like one?
The anti-tobacco playbook could help turn the US public against their beloved oversized cars.
