Hi #PortfolioDay! I'm Lars and I write and illustrate short stories, am working on a full-length graphic novel, and make games. Everything I work on goes on my website if you’re interested @ iskotaa.com! 💕
A page from my latest comic, Rey and the Mountain bear. The cover of The Adventures of Herbert Swellsparrow - a short story I just wrote and posted on my website. An illustration of my dad sitting at his desk on the computer. He is in a wheelchair and using a universal cuff to type. Some game dev concept art of a story game I’m working on, similar to Oxenfree or Lost in the Woods. It shows my beast fables characters with interaction dialogue

I'm not sure which of you need to hear this, but:

If you push yourself to your limits and burn out for a company, you are trading years of your future productivity for minor gains in the present.

Burning out will _fuck you up_, it's like brain fog or depression, and it takes years to recover

View of the Preservation Centre in Gatineau from across a pond. Two people spread a very large map across the floor of the Preservation Centre in Gatineau. A crowd of people listens to a presentation in the Pellan Room at Library and Archives Canada in Ottawa. A small group of people gathers inside the Art Vault at Library and Archives Canada to view several large, gold-framed paintings.

Yea that's what I'm worried about too. I went to see if they had something close to Lightroom the other day and was surprised that I couldn't buy anything...like, don't you need money? haha
lars.bsky.social
No kidding. I agree, I don't think they'd do it, but I also wouldn't be surprised given how many companies are willing to lose business on the "AI Bet"
lars.bsky.social
Fascinating! thanks for sharing.

The company I used to work for was also looking at heavily integrating with Canva last year. Canva was courting a lot of potential customers with a new API integration in 2024.

I'm giving it a 50/50 on this being Affinity going AI because what the fuck does this even mean. Might as well start looking around for a replacement.

I have a very limited reserve of The Only Good Website stickers back on the shop! Two sizes available!

A stack of bumper stickers that read "The Only Good Website Is One You Made Yourself" in a sort of fun, Web 1.0-inspired look

Yea it’s really great. It means if for some reason Astro was to disappear in 5 years or something, you could take all of your posts to one of many options that use MD files. Very future proof and versatile.
lars.bsky.social
You can also follow the instructions in the “Static deploy” section if you have web hosting already or want to use something different.

Hope that helps! 🤞
lars.bsky.social
Ah thank you. So Cloudflare is a domain and hosting platform. You can use it to share the files you create through this tutorial. I’ll improve that section to explain what it is, but the TLDR is it’s free and easy to use and you can quickly get a website running on it.
lars.bsky.social
Awesome, thanks for giving it a shot! It looks like your post was cut off would you mind posting the rest of your question again?

We'll definitely be coming to the Vancouver stop! Can't wait :D

No problem! Let me know if you run into any issues if you end up trying it. I've had a few people test it, but I'm always happy to adjust if something is a little confusing or the like :D

Since I know artists are particularly in need of this I’m also working on a photo gallery feature that I’ll update the theme with.

I’m just not quite done with it yet 😅❤️

I finally buckled and wrote a tutorial I've been meaning to write for ages.

If you're a non-tech person that is tired of having to change social media platforms and want a simple blog on the web, this is for you 🪄

Create your own free & portable website (for non-techies)
Astro is easy for anyone to set up, and hosting static files is often free, so you don't need to spend a lot to curate your presence on the web.

I hope this might help. I’ve seen lots of requests for cheap (in this case free) portable sites that you can take and host literally anywhere, so I wrote a tutorial. It’s how I host all of my sites and have for years.

Given what I would politely call The Current Situation here, I think it's time for a little explainer for anyone who has not experienced an early-stage startup. I think at least part of what we're seeing right now a consequence of that environment. 🧵

If you run into any problems let me know and I’ll be happy to help. The more testers the better 😁
lars.bsky.social
Yea, you got it!

You manage all of your content for your website on your computer locally, and then you can host the files wherever you want.

If you are even remotely interested in learning how to set up your own website start to finish, this is a great way to do so. My formal dev experience is a 3 hour Intro to HTML & CSS workshop and using markdown on forum posts and this was feasible for me!
