We got this
It's official! Sean Orr's on the ballot April 5th.

“I can’t wait to be at City Council to be a thorn in Ken Sim’s side every day – fighting for the housing we need, demanding real climate action like better public transit, & working to restore integrity to City Hall.” @seanorr.bsky.social #vanpoli
It’s true. I did get pissy
(we are now into councillors being pissy, as Orr says about the Energy Retrofits $$$ “let’s take it out and put it in potholes, great job," Dominato says fixing potholes is a safety issue and argues Orr is frivolous about that, and Orr says loudly "I did not say it was frivolous"

as you were)

A big #vanpoli thanks to @seanorr.bsky.social @ptfry.bsky.social @rebeccaleebligh.bsky.social and @lucymaloney.bsky.social for your efforts to fight back against the disgraceful Ken Sim/ABC budget.
Will be remembered next October, esp when people see the cuts that were hiding inside the "envelopes"

NOW: Budget debate is happening at City Hall.

Cllr @seanorr.bsky.social has just moved an amendment to exempt car-share companies from permit fee increases.

Was great to tour Kingsway Community Station today along w @lucymaloney.bsky.social. Unfortunately they’re worried that competing for a stagnant pool of grants risks their work which protects vulnerable sex workers. They’re looking for a new location but w/out service level agreement it’s likely

Council knows I don’t make a habit of this. I can count on one hand the times I’ve spoken to council as a citizen.”

Speaker 3: surprised to be called. Thought it was over. City does need a reset. I’m a city worker and I don’t want to lose my job. So I believe you that core services will be protected. But be wary of domino affect. Yes Home Depot is open but nobody is there to help you. Support VPD. You work 9-5

Ok back from break. 542: what is not in front us. Like getting a novel with half the pages missing. We aren’t employees told it’s balanced but the pages that tell us how are missing. It’s not a budget it’s an outline. You can’t debate what you can’t see. We don’t need the best slogan we need best

This was me! I think bumping is one of the most underrated threats that this budget poses to city operations, and mass layoffs will spread chaos across the public service:

My rent is going up regardless of property tax increases.
458: business council of B.C. supported zero per cent tax increase. 94% increase in property tax since 2010. Landlords pass this on to renters. Excess spending of 3.8 billion in last decade.

Listening to Ken Sim’s @cbcstephenquinn.bsky.social interview and it’s kind of surprising his team doesn’t prepare him better for this tough interviewer.

He says the police board has said no to some budget asks and the police have cut back their spending - but can’t name examples. #vanpoli

I love these reports @seanorr.bsky.social gives on the budget talks.
Reminder: council will continue to hear from speakers on the proposed budget. There’s a non zero chance we will get to speakers we missed the first time around.
Continuing here: 384: artist. I love this city but disapprove of this budget. Arts make this a vibrant place to live. This budget defers costs to those who have wealth and putting it on those who have very little. Policing does little to stop crime. I’m last 20 years I’ve seen extreme hardship.

Ok folks we are back at it again from 1-5. Yesterday was a lot. Heard from so many passionate Vancouverites.

Unfortunately I heard the mayor say it was a waste of time. But I assure you, I’m listening.
Budget hearing continued after short recess. 157: environmental lawyer (?)Reads poem. 158: raised in east van. This is austerity and hasn’t been asked for. I’ve been lucky enough to use public services. Breaks my heart to think they won’t get same quality. Few people asked for this police budget.
