This budget debate is painful.

The mayor sets an arbitrary budget target (so he can say he raised taxes less than the last mayor) then he shovels money at the police ….

and then every other city budget item has to justify its existence vs “filling potholes”.

Vancouverites can’t afford Ken Sim’s budget.
Look who's gonna pay for Ken Sim's tax break for the super-rich:

"most park board program and service fees will rise next year by an average of about 5%...swimming lessons, skate rentals and admissions to public golf courses, attractions and parks, among other things."

Swagger "proposed" #Vancouver 2026 budget

“People who pay for this expect the money is going to go back into the park systems, making our community centres, our arenas better. But the city is taking that money out of the park board and putting it into other priorities of the city.”

About a dozen parents and children here at Vancouver city hall this morning for a change-in protest in response to the city looking at removing change tables and hygiene stations. Today, council votes on the 2026 budget that would see a zero percent property tax increase.

Last day to add your voice to the most opposed city budget in Vancouver history!

ABC's slash-and-burn budget harms the whole city, including:

-the Equity Office
-Climate and Sustainability Department
-Britannia Community Centre
-Vancouver Public Library
-Parks Board.

All to help the filthy rich.
It's our last chance to stop Ken Sim's plan to slash city services to give a hand-out to the super-rich.

Cool news, Sean's motion includes direction on that.

And it also includes a direction for city staff to work on a Public Land Use policy that will protect and grow public use of land for affordable housing and other public benefit.

We’re just going to say it: this Vancouver community is AMAZING.

When we found out about Mayor Sim’s austerity budget and sneaky plan to pass it, we weren’t sure we could respond effectively in time.

Turns out, we didn’t need to worry. 🧵
