One of the many reasons "Abolish ICE" has been a popular refrain on the left — besides the fact that borders and border security means violence — is that ICE and CBP were always going to be the agencies that would become the SS.

Your great-great-grandparents commuted about an hour a day. So did Roman merchants. So do you. No matter how fast we make transportation, people just live farther from work regardless of income. It's called Marchetti's constant, basically Jevons paradox for your morning commute.

‘Get the f**k off there’: MPs, Senators call on government to abandon X/Twitter following wave of ‘Grok porn’ - The Wire Report
A proliferation of sexual deepfakes on X has prompted other countries to investigate Grok, the platform’s AI software, but, so far, Ottawa remains silent.

Hey @hedyfry.bsky.social, you're my MP and I don't understand why my MP posts constantly on X.

Why are you supporting the CSAM/non-consensual porn site? Don't you care about the safety of women and children?

The City of Vancouver continues to provide real-time text updates about council meetings exclusively on a website that produces mass amounts of deepfake non-consensual sexualized images of minors
This is harm. Time for serious people to get serious about it.

Like, a magnitude worse. And we'd have to explain how Trump never faced consequences. Then, we allowed him to be president again despite section 3 of the 14th amendment and that he pardoned most of the insurrectionists.
imagine telling yourself on january 6, 2021 that five years from now things would be so much worse

Clarence Thomas' wife plotted to overturn the 2020 election.

Both justices refused to recuse themselves from SCOTUS cases related to the January 6th plot.

It's a stain on our nation that this has effectively been forgotten.

We wrote this post in September. With 5 pedestrians killed in the same area, we explained how the road design almost guaranteed it'd happen again.

Today, we learn that another pedestrian has been killed at Lougheed and Laity St, the exact same spot where a pedestrian was killed in 2023 (1/5)

This is a devastating story. And I don't think the New York Times of all fucking places should be allowed to run a story like this without at least a paragraph acknowledging the role their newspaper had in mainstreaming the hatred that killed Lia.
A devastating story about the life and death of Lia Smith, a transgender woman and college student targeted by conservatives online because she briefly participated on the school's diving team. Lia was found dead by suicide last fall at the age of 21.

I’m not seeing a normative argument in this. If I accept your assertion that LLMs can inherently be induced to break the law and injure real human beings, and this can never be fixed, then why is it bad to for the cost of offering an LLM to the public to be very high?

The idea that congestion charges are “regressive” or harm business dissolve when held up to the benefits. It’s only regressive if you value all benefits, including time saved, at zero.
As a congestion pricing partisan, the degree to which it turns out to be One Weird Trick for a whole host of adjacent issues (business visits, noise complaints, traffic outside the zone) is delightfully surprising even to me.
Congestion pricing is an unqualified success in NYC. It would be great to see it expanded to every city with decent public transit options. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...
