We got this

It's official! Sean Orr's on the ballot April 5th.

“I can’t wait to be at City Council to be a thorn in Ken Sim’s side every day – fighting for the housing we need, demanding real climate action like better public transit, & working to restore integrity to City Hall.” @seanorr.bsky.social #vanpoli

This is why it’s a problem to have right-wing governments at the local government level. If passed, this budget would not only devastate services, it would pass debt to future councils.

Interest and inflation don’t magically disappear.

It’s “electoral math,” not fiscal prudence or good governance.
jmcelroy.bsky.social
A number of amendments are being brought forward by opposition councillors, including having a line by line budget comparison or deferring this vote until after the budget survey, but is being defeated on party lines.

Based on timelines, full budget wouldn’t be voted on until early next year.

Mayor Sim’s zero means zero motion has been tabled. 43 speakers signed up. According to Sim, this means a zero percent property tax increase. No infrastructure tax increase.

Public safety accounts for half of every property tax dollar.

The mayor wants a 0% property tax increase.

The police budget can’t be cut.

What services will be cut? How many staff will be let go? How much will fees and parking increase?

The math isn’t mathing.

47 VPD officers were paid more than $100K in OT last year, including 7 constables who more than doubled their possible $140K salaries. One sergeant raked in $239K in OT on top of possible $158K salary.

Meanwhile, the force went $6.5M over its $400M+ budget.

ICYMI on X, Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim is trying to smear COPE councillor Sean Orr for speaking at a rally against genocide. Sim tweeted straight misinformation (disinformation is harder to prove) re: who organized the event (not Samidoun). It was generally inflammatory. He has now blocked me. #vanpoli

I’ll remember the image of the fishermen. I’ll remember the joy in their faces. I’ll remember that we are in the right side of history.
seanorr.bsky.social
As someone whose parents are from the north of Ireland, I’m deeply aware of the effects of colonialism: famine, checkpoints, collective punishment. So while some will criticize me for speaking here today, I will remember where I’m from.
seanorr.bsky.social
Think about that for a second. Fishing, in their own waters. Something they aren’t allowed to do. And the joy on their faces.

I will remember that image. As a city of reconciliation, we should all remember that

of Tahsis who signed on to support.

You know, I saw a clip the other day that really encapsulates the courage of the Palestinian people:

While the Israeli navy was intercepting an aid floatilla, one of whom is a belived young climate activist, the people of Gaza managed to go fishing.
seanorr.bsky.social
And I think it’s controversial for local elected across BC blocking an emergency resolution for Palestine.

But I’m grateful for delegates from New West, Nanaimo, Victoria, Port Moody, Burnaby, Courtenay, Parksville, Squamish, Saanich, Penticton, Powell River, North Van and even the village

Calling for a boycott on Israeli wines is not controversial
But here we are

I think silence is controversial
I think famines are controversial
I think blockades are controversial
I think intercepting aid ships is controversial

Calling for an end to illegal settlements is not controversial
Being in favour of enforcing international law is not controversial
Condemning the murder of journalists, doctors, and children is not controversial
Calling for an arms embargo is not controversial

Today the mayor of Vancouver called me an antisemitic terrorist supporter. Here is my speech:

This isn’t controversial
Being against what the UN calls a genocide is not controversial
Being against apartheid is not controversial

literally just last week our mayor and his party voted down a motion presented by our very good councillor @seanorr.bsky.social that would have closed a loophole allowing these units to enter the market empty with no consequence lol

wow if only someone could have predicted that building 550sq ft "masterfully crafted, boutique condos" at like $3-4k/month would appeal to literally nobody actually looking for housing

sure fooled me!
