It's Vancouver Budget season, which means it's time for the annual debate over whether the city's property taxes are very high or very low — but year marked with the tension of Ken Sim's proposal to freeze the local portion of property taxes to zero.

Last week ABC's Brian Montague engaged in some seriously unprofessional conduct at city council. This is just a clip of a larger series of interruptions.

This sorts of bullying shouldn't be tolerated in civic business.

This is a great observation, and it's also worth noting that it's a *useful* ideological position for some people, because it so easily tips over into "we shouldn't allow newcomers here, because our services are full!"
billyidles.bsky.social
Believing it is wasteful if public services aren’t stretched to their absolute limit at all times is a fascinating ideological position.

If you oppose new rental apartments that might have a nice view because they're "luxury", but are silent about reserving nice views for the garages of $5 million+ detached houses, congrats! You're part of why Vancouver has a housing crisis.

new S(ubstack)-Bahn post: 20 years ago, Seoul was haggling over whether to install platform screen doors at its Metro stations. many called it a waste and an impossibility.

now it’s at all Metro stations across South Korea. how did this transformation happen?

More evidence that speed cameras work.

"Since those cameras were put up, 57% of drivers were slowing down and adhering to the speed limit. In some school zones, it was as high as 90%"

“Eighty-five per cent of people who have been issued one ticket have only been issued [that] one ticket”
Region of Waterloo releases data suggesting speed cameras are making roads safer
The Region of Waterloo says drivers are changing their behaviours thanks to municipal speed cameras.

I wrote an article about parking, and with curbside space being a finite resource, businesses betting on it to forever sustain them might be quite the gamble.

The topical example is of course Burnaby Heights and BRT, but the argument can apply to many other uses.

Betting on Parking is Risky Business
Curbspace is finite. Are we sure we're using this extremely valuable resource to its fullest extent?

Would you rather have new convenient transit access to the wonderful restaurants and shops in Burnaby Heights, or to a station that's already served by SkyTrain?

The choice is yours!

Metrotown–North Shore Bus Rapid Transit
EXPLAINED

A graphic of the MNS BRT route with a question mark around the undecided portion of the route
Park royal - Lonsdale - Phibbs Exchange - Kootenay Loop - Maybe Burnaby Heights - Brentwood - BCIT - Metrotown

Movement: Metro Vancouver Transit Riders Above: An image of apartment-lined, coffee shop full Hastings Street in Burnaby Heights, from TransLink

Below: Car dealerships and wide streets and powerlines on Boundary Road, Image from Google

In the middle: Which street do you think has more transit riders? And what even is Bus Rapid Transit? An image of BRT in Utrecht, from Karl Fjellstrom, Far East Mobility

What is Bus Rapid Transit?

BRT is like SkyTrain for the road!
It’s fast, frequent and reliable
- buses every five minutes
- dedicated lanes to zoom past traffic
- fancy stations

Seattle put in BRT and ridership doubled in less than a year What is the Metrotown-North Shore BRT?

This new BRT route will go from Metrotown to Park Royal in only 60 minutes

The exact route is still undecided

A map of the route from TransLink is displayed in the background

Aftermath of a car crash in Utrecht, Netherlands:
*The street is closed off to cars.
*Police measure angles of impact and look for possible causes (to prevent future crashes).
*Officers politely summarize the incident with people walking & rolling by.

How are car crashes evaluated in YOUR city?

I think it's pretty cool that @movementyvr.bsky.social just had a sold-out, standing room only, transit-themed comedy show with the crowd laughing their butts off. A director from the TransLink Board and a sitting MLA being in the crowd and getting every single joke was the 🍒 on top 🚍♥️

Thanks King for defending the Georgia St bus lane.

When will @davidebybc.bsky.social finally permit automated bus lane enforcement so entitled people in Benzes can't break the law with impunity?

Victoria councillor here. This is a very big problem and another strike against municipal parties.

We are taught, upon election, that strategizing is allowed as long as it does not meet quorum. Quorum = 6 in Vancouver, so they seem to have broken it. And city staff should know better.

The provincial housing reforms haven't done nearly enough in the City of Vancouver, the epicentre of the housing crisis.

The appointment of Christine Boyle as the new housing minister is a chance for a reset. Read more in my op-ed on the DailyHive:

Opinion: The next policies B.C. government must pursue to deliver more homes | Urbanized
Vancouver’s housing crisis isn’t going away. We need a provincial government that treats housing as a top priority.

This. Is. Huge.

It appears that the judge saved the bike lanes because they found that:
-removing the bike lanes would reduce the safety of cyclists, going against the charter of rights and freedoms
-removing the bike lanes would worsen congestion, going against the removal's stated purpose

@jmcelroy.bsky.social should make a chart on how many CBC articles reporting on car crashes are titled like this

Dear journalists, I am once again asking you to insert one single ounce of active agency or causality in the headlines you write for fatal car crashes
