Transit polls well. We use that popularity to push for more reliable and abundant transit. Let's make it better than driving. I'm in Vancouver - unceded xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlilwətaɬ land. Executive Director of @movementyvr.bsky.social

Although we disagree with the conclusions from SDOT's traffic study, its traffic counts were very eye-opening:
• Over 3 times as many people use Denny Way to access areas east of I-5 than to access I-5 S
• Of the people continuing east, 35% do so in a car, 34% in a Route 8 bus, and 31% on foot

SDOT has updated their post about Denny Way bus lanes and have uploaded the full traffic study, which you can read below.

In short, it's a 516 page document that does not mention mode shift or alternate routing a single time.

Unfortunately those are pretty small potatoes in the context of the transit budget. Need more taxes!

I caught the newly opened Port Moody shoreline boardwalk at sunset the other day, and it is pretty great.

Between being out in the suburbs and being newly opened, I think it is fair to say it qualifies as a 'hidden gem'

They are doing all door boarding but riders have to tap their card on a validator. They could save time by doing off board fare payment.

I wonder if the culprit isn't actually just cars (ie they don't have signal priority for buses to preserve capacity for cars).

Pie-IX BRT in Montreal is slower than the bus route it replaced. The article blames increased ridership (longer dwell) and increased red light time. But they wave the signal delay off as part of vision zero.

YUL ppl: is that legit? Could they still save time?

Who are we going to export fossil fuels to when they're the most expensive fuel on the market? You don't build a pipeline for today's demand, you build it for 10 years out. We're being left in the dust.
denisagar.bsky.social
Even CBC is so far behind on the pipeline issue. When covering this, they should be discussing one thing at the top of every story:

fossil fuels are done.

Pakistan has imported solar panels equivalent to their entire grid's capacity and they're just getting started.

Interestingly, the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association, who had previously opposed the infrastructure, eventually reversed their position and became one of the city’s most vocal cycling proponents—calling protected bike lanes “the way of the future” and a “win–win–win for all users”.

When newly-elected Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson started converting car lanes to bike lanes in 2009, pundits claimed it was political suicide. In 2018, he stepped down after three terms as the longest-serving mayor in the city's history. So what can this tale teach us about so-called "bikelash"?🧵

We often focus on municipal issues, but the Province has a giant role to play in keeping people safe on our streets.

Here are 5 ideas the Province could implement, most of them nearly overnight, all of them within current budget constraints (a few even make money!) in order to save lives.
