Every year in Metro Vancouver, car crashes kill 100 people. We can get to zero by demanding that governments design transportation systems to put safety first. http://linkin.bio/visionzeroyvr

Remember, 5.3 people are killed every day by motor vehicles in Canada. There aren’t widespread movements to put speed limiters on motor vehicles.

Just some context that any #ebike news story should have when advocates against ebikes are interviewed.

We often focus on municipal issues, but the Province has a giant role to play in keeping people safe on our streets.

Here are 5 ideas the Province could implement, most of them nearly overnight, all of them within current budget constraints (a few even make money!) in order to save lives.

Exciting to see the ribbon cutting for this new plaza, a collaboration between the city and the Uptown BIA. New West is doing great things for place-making and community building. Thanks to Mayor @pjnewwest.bsky.social, city staff, the BIA, and all involved!

This same stretch of Lougheed has claimed 5 pedestrian lives in recent memory, and now another is in hospital with life-threatening injuries at the same spot where a pedestrian was killed in 2023.

PLEASE contact the local politicians and demand action.

We've said about a dozen times that this will happen again here, and while we still wait for any sort of reply, yesterday it happened again (though fortunately not fatal).

Active transportation grants help make our streets safer yet the province is pausing them? Inaction has a cost too - people’s lives are at stake.

Eby repealed a carbon tax that had been working in BC for almost 2 decades in order to make gas a bit cheaper, and handed out $410 million to drivers for basically no reason. And now there's no money for active transport grants. 300 people a year are killed in BC in motor vehicle crashes.

“It’s just like any other political movement. It takes sustained pressure, and it takes a lot of voices [...] sending emails to your city councillor [and MP], asking for a meeting [...] all of those little acts that don’t take a ton of effort accumulate into the pressure we need for change.”

tough choice! I live near Main & Kingsway and it's pretty bad, but I don't generally feel like I'm about to die there the way I do in that part of Richmond.

What's the worst intersection in Metro Vancouver, and why is it Main & East 7th & Kingsway?

More importantly: how would you redesign it?

My take: like all of Kingsway, it should have protected bike lanes. Also let's make it transit only between Main St and Broadway. And allow pedestrians to cross.

Please join me in voting for Vancouver's worst intersection: Main and 7th.

I lived above this intersection, breathing tire dust and dodging rams, for 5 years. There is an incredible assortment of small businesses and a thriving community here, but the intersection is awful.
