niche post but I've been going in yet another Ruth Rubin deep dive lately preparing for a song teaching thing this winter. she was a Canadian-American Yiddish song collector and folklorist. came across this 1978 musical evening recording with her lecturing mostly in Yiddish about folk songs.😁🎶

Ken Sim's property tax stunt starts with an arbitrary, politically-motivated number and asks staff to cut until they meet it.

We should be asking what it will take to meet the expectations of the people we serve.

This budget is reckless. Our infrastructure is crumbling, our amenities are quite literally falling apart. A 0% increase combined with a raise for the VPD means big cuts to already struggling services and infrastructure, no matter how ABC wants to spin it.

for example there is mold and cracks anywhere you look too closely. there is plywood and caution tape covering part about 1/4 of the area around the pool. ceiling panel half fallen off and left where it is. I dunno what can be worse but "something broke and we can't afford to patch it, we're closed"

the city pool I swim at (Britannia) is falling apart and Sim and his people canceled building a replacement. the staff try their best but like they're just patching repairs on a very old building that is regularly falling apart. with even less resources what's next?

Muslims and Jews have a parallel problem: they both have religious concepts of unified global communities, “umma” and “am yisrael,” which do not map onto any empirical reality.

Even accounting for the radical disparity in numbers, with Muslims a far greater percentage of humanity, both communities
