The single funniest joke about a game being so bad it harms your computer is the time in ~2002 when Daikatana *literally, without a lick of exaggeration* crashed so hard it corrupted my hard drive and I had to reinstall Windows
i know it's 90% off but a warning to potential customers not to buy the steam version of heavy rain. it is not safe. it installs heavy rain on your computer

I think regularly about a decade-old tweet along the lines of “dogs lick us because they know we have bones inside us and they want ‘em”

I adore how laughing yoga is such a clear example of how your subjective experience is mediated by parts of the brain with no concept of reality

You force yourself to laugh, and your limbic system says “well, laughter is a prosocial activity, so you must be socializing, here’s a burst of oxytocin”

The entire project of SRS is just “how to best model/predict the natural human forgetting curve”, so maybe that should be obvious. But it’s neat to me that fancy ML work is only needed upfront (with occasional retuning)

Neat high-level article from the creator of FSRS.

I finally sat down to learn how FSRS works (the latest spaced repetition algorithm for e.g. Anki), and while there’s some gradient descent in optimizing estimated settings for new cards, I’m sort of stunned the rest of the algorithm is Just Basic Algebra.

Love when a software library literally does not do a thing it claims to, the example usage does not work, and the blog post explaining the feature has an explanation at the end saying "this post was written by taking a blog post written by [our competitor] and running it through ChatGPT"

"i am sorry for what i have done in the past and don't yet know how to fix it, but don't want to make it worse" is legitimately about the level best you can hope for someone like this to say, and it should be strongly encouraged anywhere we see it

Yeah, things are broadly positive (the qigong perspective would be “there can be temporary discomfort when qi starts flowing in a place it’s been stagnant”, my pelvic floor PT’s take is it’s temporary, and manual therapy from her helps), even if it’s extraordinarily frustrating at this exact moment

On the one hand, I do not miss either of the two times in my life I hated myself enough to Hackintosh.

On the other hand, I fucking miss my little 7” Dell netbook running MacOS, that thing was a true delight.

lmao I am once again entering the pain cycle where my poor fucked up abdominal wall only activates properly when I'm doing certain forms of qigong breathwork + meditation, so if I meditate too much I get soreness from those muscles working in ways they are not used to. Literally DOMS from breathing.

I once worked for someone who, on being called out for being a dick to their subordinates, explicitly said “well, my boss stole credit for my work, it sucked, now I’ve earned my turn, and someday it’ll be your turn”. I’m still stunned they said the quiet part out loud.
